Life & Work with Shaunee Brannan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaunee Brannan.

Hi Shaunee, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Detroit by a stay-at-home mother, and a father who eventually became a fire chief for the city of Detroit. We were raised with strong family values, hard work ethic, and a spiritual foundation. As I grew older, I began traveling and singing with different gospel artists in the gospel and CCM industry. After 3 years of doing this, I decided to put down roots and stay home to seek other interests working in corporate America. As time went on, I saw the impact and influence that I had on people, women in particular, and just how much people enjoyed the stories I’d share about my life and family. I started a blog called Prayers and Punchlines where I could share my outlook on Fashion, Family, Faith, and Fun. I took some time off to regroup mentally, and refocus on my writing. After doing so I was able to write two books, “Hi Insecurity. Bye Insecurity” and “The 365 Prayer Project”. One helps individuals to spot the underlining presence of insecurity in their lives, while the other helps one builds a prayer relationship with God. I also regularly blog on life and fashion on my website, which has created a wonderful way to remain connected with people while giving my personal thoughts and opinions with those within my sphere of influence.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been easy. Growing means facing yourself and all of your dysfunctions. And sometimes doing that is harder than anything. Also getting married and having children forces you to make many transitions that you often do not feel prepared for. It has been a big journey for me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
From the creative side, I’m known for my perspective on fashion and humor. I love telling stories. I’ve done it since I was a child. I am humorous at heart and notice the humor in things that others would not. Being able to sit down and write about these things, painting a vivid picture with my words, and bringing people into my experiences is so enjoyable. I typically share most of these funny stories via social media to brighten everyone’s day with the funny details of my girls. It’s an instant mood lifter. I also love sharing my perspective on fashion. My style is a marriage of trendy, edgy, modesty, and a lady-like nature that goes anywhere from thrifted finds for $0.50 to hard-to-find high-end pieces that I stumbled across somehow. I feel that the art of being a lady is something that my mother passed to me, and has been lost in some ways. I don’t believe in preaching to people. I believe in showing them better than telling them. My blog is a way to do that. It can be found at www.shauneebrannan.com or www.prayersandpunchlines.com

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m a big YouTube person. I watch a lot of motivational and spiritual content to encourage me to keep going. Bishop T.D. Jakes, Lana Vowser, and Dr. Cindy Trimm are people that help to speak right to the heart of where I am.
