Life & Work with Scott Gavan of ZEELAND

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Gavan.

Scott, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In early 2025, when Scott faced an unexpected job loss, the family was at a crossroads. As the primary breadwinner, the pressure was on to bridge the financial gap, but Scott saw an opportunity within the challenge: a chance to finally build something that Vatsana could lead.

He applied his professional background to research low-risk, high-demand service industries and discovered the “poop scooping” niche. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was practical, essential, and underserved in their area. While large corporate franchises existed, there was a glaring lack of a reliable, locally owned option.

They launched Mac Scoops with a “Gen X” grit—a philosophy rooted in the idea that no job is beneath you if it’s done with excellence. Scott handles the “back office” strategy and financial scaffolding, while Vatsana serves as the face and force of the company. Together, they’ve turned a “dirty job” into a premium service built on trust, local pride, and a deep love for dogs.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Trying to compete with corporate owned businesses with big advertising budgets and ever-expanding territories has been a challenge. However, we’ve been able to win some customers that found them to be less than reliable. Aside from that – Michigan winter has been exceptionally tough as we are a “boots on the ground” business and we’ve had to wear some tall, warm boots this year to complete our tasks!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
“We are Generation X—we aren’t afraid to get our hands dirty, and we don’t believe in shortcuts. We pride ourselves on the kind of communication and ‘go-the-extra-mile’ service that feels like it’s from a different era. To us, a clean yard isn’t just about waste; it’s about the customer’s peace of mind.”

You can hire a corporate franchise, or you can hire a neighbor. At Mac Scoops, we treat every yard like it belongs to our family. Because we live here and love this community, our reputation is on the line with every scoop. We aren’t just a logo on a truck; we’re the people you see at the local park.”

There is zero judgment here. We know everyone has to make tough choices about where their time and dollars go. Our goal isn’t just to pick up after dogs; it’s to give a busy family their Saturday back or help a senior keep their pet healthy. If our customers feel that hiring us was the best decision they made all week, then we’ve done our job.”

We’re a classic partnership. Scott is the visionary—the one who saw the data and built the professional framework to make us a ‘real’ business. Vatsana is the heart and the face. She’s the one building relationships with the clients and the pups, proving every day that hard work is the best form of customer service.”

Any big plans?
“We’re growing the old-fashioned way: one satisfied neighbor at a time. While we’re expanding slowly and carefully, every dollar is reinvested back into the dream. We’re working toward the day where Mac Scoops isn’t just a business, but Vatsana’s full-time calling.”
