Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Dixon
Hi Scott, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Since I’ve always had various old cars and motorcycles, I decided that I wanted to start a restoration shop back around 2001. At that time we mainly worked on muscle cars and was doing quite well but my primary job interfered and I couldn’t continue the restoration business.
Fast forward to 2021 and was able to retired at 59 years old after working overseas for many years. I was fortunate to have a very good career that allowed me to retire early.
I decided to start Dixon MotoWorks Vintage Step Vans. We offer restoration and customizing of step vans, primarily pre-1965 model years. Most people don’t know what a step van is. They are the old bread delivery trucks, milk trucks, ice cream trucks, etc. The popularity of these vehicle have increased significantly in recent times and our business has been flourishing.
We typically have about 6 active customer projects going on and employee 3-6 employees depending on the work load. Our specialty is performing modern engine/transmission swaps as well as modern chassis’ to be used under the vintage van bodies. This gives the customer the convenience of more powerful motor, automatic transmission, and vasty superior suspension and brakes, all the issues the originals lacked. We also offer the popular air ride suspension and air conditioning options.
Our business has a unique niche and continues to grow. We frequent Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube to get our business exposure to all different types of people. We can be found by searching Dixon MotoWorks Vintage Step Vans.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We have a lot of the same struggles as many businesses do which is finding finding qualified workers. Since we required workers who are skilled in welding and fabrication as well as some automotive knowledge, it can be challenging to have the needed manpower for our ever growing client’s projects.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I started my adult work career in the US navy. I spent 6 years there and it was very good to me. It gave me a great technical educations and experience. After my Navy time, I became a Field Engineer and traveled the work working at power plants, gas compression stations, and offshore oil production facilities. I moved on to power plant management which had me live in Peru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and most recently in Ghana. This all was completely different than what I do now but truly love what I’m doing.
