Life & Work with Samaiyah Abdur-Rahman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samaiyah Abdur-Rahman. 

Hi Samaiyah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Art is my release. My artistic journey propelled upwards after I created custom jars, pictured letters, and decorative mirrors. My clothing collection is boldly shaped by my fluid images from SJL Creations LC. The colors I choose for the designs are based on my passions and my moods. My abstract art mirrors my feelings. You can see happiness, joy, sadness, and anger in each canvas, just like the hoodies, skirts, and leggings. I like to create art that is open to various interpretations. My aunt’s clothing line inspired me to combine my passion for art and clothing. I want people to wear my art and bring it to life. Seeing the images and colors in motion is a dream come true. 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a small business owner has its ups and downs, but I am favored and blessed to be able to express myself creatively with my clothing line and my canvas art. 

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My brand SJL Creations LC has transformed into pieces of clothing that embrace life under Haus of Imani. Haus of Imani the abstract formations came to life through clothing. Long skirts, flirty dresses, swimwear, and casual pants for men and women were unveiled June 4th, 2022. The colors that grace the canvases are now active parts of life and decree the passion and interpretations behind each design. I am most proud of who I have become. I am in receiving mode for myself and my endeavors. I am proud of being part of Michigan Fashion Week, Beauty In Me Fashion Show, and being featured in Live in the D Channel 4 news segment. I am extremely grateful that I can tell my story for the second time with Voyage Magazine. I am looking forward to participating in New York Fashion Week with The Model Experience in September 2022 in Brooklyn, NY. Most importantly, I am most proud of every blessing that is on the way. What sets me apart from others is that I transformed abstract art into clothing that is alive and shifting with different interpretations. 

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The lessons that I have learned are keep going, never give up, keep changing, keep seeking God, praying for direction, and being grateful for his blessings. I also learned that you must stay hopeful, optimistic, encouraged, be confident, and trust God with all your mind, body, and soul.
