Today, we’d like to introduce you to Sahil Aswani.
Hi Sahil, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I take pride in my multicultural background, diversified global experiences, and ability to speak at least five languages. My background and values are ingrained since I was born in India but brought up in Nigeria; in addition, I have worked in Nigeria, Singapore, and the US and have traveled to multiple locations around the world.
Currently, I am a Consultant – IT Risk & Specialized Assurance in Risk & Financial Advisory at Deloitte US. In May 2020, I obtained my BA in Accounting from Michigan State University – Broad College of Business as an International Student.
On the other hand, ever since I was a child, I have been passionate about music and understanding how to mix and blend two songs. Finally, in March 2023, I took the step to buy a DJ controller and officially began my journey as a DJ during my free time. It has been a blessing to be surrounded by supportive individuals in the industry who have helped me gain great exposure.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It has been a challenging journey leaving home after the first 18 years of my life and being a Third Culture Individual. This involves mental health challenges and can stem from challenges in school/work, immigration hurdles, and identity development.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an open-format DJ, particularly specializing in Afrobeats and Amapiano sounds. The ability to bring international music together with Afrobeats and Amapiano sounds is something that I am passionate about, and I continue to develop my skillset & output around.
I am proud to be a part of the broader community pushing African music while not looking the part, even though I spent the first 18 years of my life in Nigeria and growing up to the music.
What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
As we are already seeing the trend, I continue to expect music from the African continent to continue to grow.
Currently, we notice certain nations pioneering the industry, but I am noticing and expect other African nations to make international discoveries as investments are being made on the continent.
