Today we’d like to introduce you to Renee Bolla.
Hi Renee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always loved to write but I didn’t necessarily grow up dreaming of becoming an author. I dreamt of working in the fashion industry. And I did just that. I studied Business and Apparel Merchandising in college and jumped right into the corporate world after I graduated. I worked for some of the largest retailers in the country from Walmart to Macy’s to Target… But after almost 20 years in a corporate setting, I was burnt out. In 2020 I was presented with an offer that would change my life forever. In that moment it was one of the hardest decisions I ever made. To leave my comfy corporate job and everything I knew to start something completely new and unknown? It was terrifying, to put it bluntly. It was a pivotal moment in my life. I am now an entrepreneur, brand consultant and children’s picture book author. I’m so happy I took a chance on myself; I am right where I want to be in Iife.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is life ever a smooth road? I have never viewed life’s path as linear and smooth, that’s what makes it exciting and worth it. Starting a new venture feels like you are pushing a boulder up a mountain. There is no roadmap. You have to try new things, fail, learn and course correct. When I started my author journey I was filled with excitement, determination, curiousity and a lot of nerves. The biggest hurdle for me, personally, has been dealing with imposter syndrome. There are days that I question if I made the right choice. I question my skills and ability and often question if I will succeed. I am a mother of three and an entrepreneur, that is a full plate. It can be overwhelming at times emotionally, mentally and physically but even when I feel overwhelmed or experience imposter syndrome, I am fueled by how much I love doing this. It’s a different feeling than climbing a corporate ladder. I am doing something I want to be doing, not for a title, not for a raise, but for me. When that is your motivation there is no struggle you won’t overcome.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a retail executive turned children’s picture book author. It’s still surreal to say that out loud. If you would have asked me two years ago if I ever thought, I would or could write and publish a children’s book I would have laughed. That idea seemed so far-fetched and out of my scope. But here I am with not just one but two books out there in the world. I am proud of myself for taking a chance on me.
About my books.
Finding Bunny, is my debut book which came out in March of this year, 2022. It is a heartwarming story about friendship and emotions. It was inspired by my youngest daughter, Elle, and her best friend, Bunny. It is an emotional journey about Elle losing and finding her best friend, Bunny, something so many can relate to. It definitely speaks to all the stuffy lovers out there, young and old.
My second book, Imagine That, just released in September of this year, 2022. This is a story that will spark imagination and empower children to creatively conquer their fear of the dark. It was inspired by my first born, Emma, who is adventurous and fearless during all aspects of life, but bedtime evokes very different feelings. It is perfect for children with big imaginations who battle a fear of the dark.
I am a member of the SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) and Julie Hedlund’s 12×12 Picture Book Challenge. I wouldn’t be here without these writing communities. I am grateful to have connected with so many talented artists that have guided me along my journey.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Just start, take the first step. You do not have to have it all figured out in the beginning; this is a long game. You will learn, make mistakes and grow along your journey. If you think you have to wait until you have everything figured out, you will never begin. Taking the first step is the hardest but once you do you won’t look back.
I would also encourage you to find your tribe, your community, along the way. People who will support you, be honest with you, encourage you, provide guidance and advice that will stretch you and contribute to your grow.
And most importantly believe in yourself, be your #1 fan!
