Life & Work with Olivia Coté of Traverse City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Coté.

Hi Olivia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been the type who can’t just set down a snack—I have to make it pretty! Building charcuterie boards has been a creative outlet for quite a while. I even joke that a well-crafted board would be my “last meal” because I love it that much!

What started as a fun hobby for me quickly grew into something more. My fiancé was the first to say, “These are works of art—you could sell them!” At first, I laughed it off, but the idea stuck. Soon enough, I realized it wasn’t just about food—it was about creating experiences that bring people together! To gather, relax and enjoy each others company.

Since launching in May 2024, I’ve been honored to design boards and grazing tables for weddings, birthdays, showers, open houses, and more. I’ve even had the joy of teaching charcuterie classes at various libraries across northern Michigan.

Looking back, I’m beyond grateful for how far this little dream has come. I’m proud of what I’ve built so far, and I can’t wait to keep growing my craft—and sharing it with all of you!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth? Not particularly—but that’s part of the adventure. This is my first time running my own business, and while there’s been a learning curve, I’ve grown so much from it. Managing the financial and business side has definitely stretched me, and the shift from having a boss to being fully accountable to myself was a big adjustment.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Up North Charcuterie is my locally owned small business in Traverse City that specializes in hand-crafting charcuterie spreads that are pleasing to the eye as well as the palate. They are perfect for any occasion or gathering, big and small! My goal is to create something of a centerpiece that can also be consumed! I am most proud of my unique attention to detail and creativity, and I do believe that sets me apart from other businesses in town.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I would absolutely say that if you are starting your own business in the food industry, please don’t feel like you have to rush! Everything will happen in its own time and you shouldn’t worry if you are “doing enough”. You are definitely doing enough and you should be so proud of yourself!!
