Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Bennett
Hi Olivia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I personally never saw myself going to the typical 4 year college, I always knew I wanted to do something in the beauty field but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do. In middle school, I picked up a hobby of sitting in my room creating different makeup looks for fun whether it was following a YouTube tutorial, finding photos on Pinterest or simply just creating them on my own, but, little did I know it would actually become a passion of mine, turning into a big part of my career now. Throughout high school when trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life I really kept being a makeup artist in mind. My mom went to cosmetology school and is a hair stylist but I knew that wasn’t for me, so between doing some research, talking to my mom and spending almost every Saturday in the Salon she worked at, I eventually became very interested in the esthetician path, mostly sticking out to me was learning about the skin. During the pandemic I really became more interested in the whole skincare side of being an esthetician. At the end of 2020, I went on a tour at Douglas J Aveda Institute for their esthetician program and absolutely loved it, I knew that was going to be my exact path. I graduated high school and shortly went to become an esthetician. During school I fell in love with every service I learned and all the deep knowledge I gained in everything, from product ingredients to how to perform a service. I graduated from the Aveda Institute in December 2021 at 18 years old and took my state boards to become a licensed esthetician. After becoming licensed I knew I wanted to continue my education so I went on to become certified in eyelash extensions, lash lifts and brow laminations. In January of 2023 a few days after turning 20 years old I started my job as an esthetician at Salon Enve. I am definitely still working on growing but I’m now 22 years old still at Salon Enve as an independent esthetician providing skin services, eyelashes, eyebrows, waxings and makeup!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. It definitely was hard being 18 in school all the time also trying to balance studying, not missing any school and work. Starting this career path has come with some very stressful times along the way. For example, getting products to start out, finding a place for my work, and building a clientele. It is very hard building a clientele in any field. It took me a very long time to get to where I am at and I am not exactly where I would like to be but I am thankful to be where I am currently. All my clients and the girls at the salon, especially Lanell and Alisha, really helped me get to where I am at and I couldn’t be any more grateful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an independent licensed esthetician and lash tech at Salon Enve in Fenton, Michigan. I perform services such as eyelash extensions, eyelash lifts, eyebrow laminations, facial waxing, full body waxing, skincare services and makeup for all occasions!
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite memory from my childhood was our family road trips to Florida. Now that we are all getting older and find our own ways of transportation whether it’s buying our own plane tickets or taking our own cars I often cherish those times we had with the 6 of us being stuck in a car for 20 hours together. My family was the type of family to drive to any destination, flying wasn’t even an option. Every road trip we had the same tradition. My sisters and I would get home from school, we would load up the car, stop and get fast food for dinner, then carry on with our drive watching movies, playing games or just simply doing our own thing to keep us occupied. We always drove through the night so in the morning we would always find the nearest Cracker Barrel to stop in and get some breakfast before we made it to our final destination. Going on road trips were always exciting because we got to get things we would never be allowed to have at home like gas station candy and snacks, and fast food.
