Life & Work with Nick Spencer of Traverse City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Spencer.

Hi Nick, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Pug Loop started in 2017 as a solo indie folk punk/anti-folk project, but has evolved into a two piece emo folk/pop punk band. We currently reside in Benzie county but consider Traverse City Pug Loop’s hometown. With the 2024 release of Point Chamberlain, Pug Loop’s second full length album, we’ve begun touring and playing shows out of state.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Finding a way to bring the songs to life in a live setting has been the biggest test for the band. When working as a solo artist I would often use backing tracks or just play acoustic, both of which lacked the energy of the recorded songs. With the addition of Emma Kelly on drums in 2024 the live show has taken on a brand new life!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Pug Loops unique sound comes from a variety of influences and a range of artists. Green Day was my first favorite band, and I think that shows with the pop song structures and melodies. Growing up in Northern Michigan had the biggest impact on the themes you seen in the Pug Loop discography. I’ve always found a lot of inspiration in nature. Many of our songs include references to plants, water, and the earth, with often a dark cryptic twist.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best way you can support Pug Loop is coming out to a show and talking with us. Meeting people who like our music is the biggest motivator for us. We love meeting other artists and musicians in the area. We’re always looking for shows to play even if it’s in someone’s backyard, garage, or basement!
