Today we’d like to introduce you to Nan Haduck.
Hi Nan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started beauty school in 2015. It was something I knew I wanted since I was a young kid. I grew up in dance and my favorite part was always doing the hair and makeup. I would do my friends hair for prom, and I would teach myself how to French braid in class in highschool.
I started my career in June 2016 assisting at a salon in Birmingham. It was the hardest 3 years of my life but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. That assistant program made me the stylist I am today. It was hard but I felt so confident after I was done. After leaving that salon after 4 years behind the chair I was asked to be the character designer for a horror film, I worked on shoots, I worked on runway. I did everything my career would let me do. I moved across the country to Oregon for 3 years(2021-2024) and really found my style and fell in love with cutting hair. I moved back to Detroit for family and I currently work in a studio that I co-own. The beauty industry is a wonderful thing. I’ve met so many cool people and have gotten to do so many cool things along the way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. I still have times where I hate everything I do. I’ve almost quit several times. I’ve rebuilt a clientele from 0 3 separate times. I had almost given up this last time. I’m so glad I didn’t I’ve found my groove again. It’s definitely hard work being behind the chair but I’m so happy to keep learning and connecting with people. It is such a rewarding career.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I always like to say I “do hair for people who hate doing their hair” I love custom creating cuts and colors that don’t require a lot of styling or work to look nice. I’ve definitely fallen in love with curly hair over the past 11 years. Cutting for specific textures has been my passion. I love learning new techniques and I absolutely love showing people their natural texture for the first time.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think being honest with my clients is a big one. We have to know our limits and know what we can achieve. If I don’t like something I correct it immediately or I have them come back. People appreciate when you’re honest first. I also always talk through and work through my haircuts with my clients. I also work my butt off. I worked 2 jobs just to rebuild a clientele when I moved back to Michigan and I never gave up on this career. It’s hard to rebuild when you used to have a full book but it’s not impossible. It all depends on you.
