Life & Work with Mishal Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mishal Washington.

Hi Mishal, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Makeup truly fell into my lap; I always joke about being a makeup artist because growing up my sisters and I was not allowed to wear makeup at all.

When I graduated High School, I went off to college at Western Michigan University having no real idea what I wanted to study, I chose early childhood education. Because all six of my older siblings attended and graduated college, I assumed that’s what I was supposed to do too.

During my time at WMU, I met a very good friend of mine who taught me how to pencil in my eyebrows and do a bit of eyeshadow. The rest is history. I took a real liking to makeup. I found myself trying to practice on all my friends in our dorm room and that’s how I knew makeup artistry was for me, no matter how bad or unblended my makeup was I was so proud to wear it.

I eventually left Western the following semester. When I returned home my interest in makeup continued to grow, I began to teach myself trending techniques through a lot of trial and error, and after years of practice in 2018, I took my very first client.

In the following years, I did makeup very inconsistently, but in 2021 I decided I was going to take my craft seriously and in turn, I birthed TBC.

TBC has grown tremendously in a very small amount of time. I have gained traction in the city of Detroit with my regular clientele, I have also worked two fashion Shows at the University of Michigan, and have had a plethora of other opportunities. all while still working in Corporate America

This year I have finally begun taking artistry courses, learning from other amazing artists in the city! And am excited to continue to expand my brand and my company to other parts of the beauty industry.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There have been a few challenges but a lot of them have actually been internal. There have been times when I almost decided to walk away from the beauty industry altogether. Sometimes I wasn’t as confident in myself and felt that the industry was way too oversaturated and there wasn’t really a place for me, but every day I am proving myself wrong. Every day my confidence in myself and my work grows. And I gain loyal clients which make me so happy

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a makeup artist! I specialize in soft glam for women of all ages and ethnicities. I am known for my signature soft glam look that enhances all my client’s features, I am also known for my customer service which is really big to me. I like for my clients to feel completely comfortable and most times they do! I am most proud of my growth in the industry and to even be asked to be interviewed by different media outlets, like magazines, podcasts, etc.

What was you like growing up?
Growing up I was a ball of energy I played five sports throughout my childhood. I’ve always had a very charismatic, outgoing personality, I was never afraid to talk to anyone or shy at all. Very much a people person, being the youngest of 7 there’s really always someone to talk to

Growing up I was interested in my sports, mainly gymnastics. I was a gymnast for 15 years and then went on to be a gymnastics instructor at the same gym I was trained in.
