Today we’d like to introduce you to Miriam Lamb
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in Northern Virginia but lived in the Midwest and various parts of the DC area before settling in a comfortable suburb. From a young age, I was always marching to the beat of my own drum, which sometimes felt like a blessing and a curse. Despite facing challenges, I remained true to myself and developed a deep curiosity about life. I immersed myself in music; attending operas, symphonies, world music, punk, and heavy metal performances. My parents encouraged me to explore various cultures, and I learned piano, violin, and guitar.
After college and graduate school, I lived in California for 25 years, where I delved into cultural anthropology, business, and human resources. My interest in how people are shaped by their environments led me to a deeper exploration of human behavior. After working in HR and facing my own challenges, I transitioned to transpersonal psychology, combining mind-body approaches to healing. I’ve worked in diverse settings, from schools to private practices.
I recently moved to Michigan to be closer to family, as many of them are facing health challenges. The natural beauty of the area also resonates with me. In my free time, I enjoy songwriting, writing poetry, camping, hiking, attending cultural events, and learning about metaphysical/psychological topics. I’m currently working on a metaphysical sci-fi book about overcoming fear and embracing a love-based approach to life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been easy. I’ve faced health challenges while helping family members with their own struggles, which led me to question the meaning of life. However, finding a sense of purpose and receiving medical support helped me recover. This experience deepened my resilience and inspired me to work with clients facing chronic health issues. It also taught me the importance of self-empowerment within the healthcare system. Music, which has always been a source of strength, has helped me navigate life’s challenges.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 12 years of experience. I specialize in helping youth, adolescents, and adults with challenges like depression, LGBTQ+ issues, racial trauma, chronic illness, spirituality, grief, trauma, anxiety, relationship issues, and major life transitions. I’m nearing completion of a degree in public health and a health coaching certificate. I plan to offer remote services later this year.
I use a blend of creative holistic therapies such as guided visualization, mindfulness, EMDR, humanistic therapies, dreamwork, somatic approaches, and CBT. I prioritize building a positive, safe therapeutic alliance and help clients explore their subconscious beliefs, family patterns, and unique stories to help them achieve personal growth and authenticity.
I also enjoy writing and am currently working on a book about overcoming fear and embracing authenticity. I’m exploring ways to turn my writing into a web series or TV show and have recently returned to songwriting and playing guitar. Much of my inspiration comes from music and the human experience.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Trust your instincts while staying informed. Don’t let naysayers deter you; their doubts often stem from their own insecurities. Stay current with trends in your field, build connections, and continue your education. The journey can be tough, especially for me during the required 3,000 hours for licensure in California, but focusing on the bigger picture – helping others getting in touch with their authenticity – can keep you motivated. Never give up!
