Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Logan.
Hi Mike, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My career started as simple as asking to perform comedy at an open mic in Grand Rapids, MI 11 and a half years ago called The Sunday Night Funnies, run by a great guy named Brian B. After that I realized I’m very good at stand-up and traveled all over for years performing until eventually I started producing my own events along with touring and gained a ton of experience and expertise in the profession. I used my abilities and whatever influence I had to advocate for equity for all voices in the Michigan comedy scene often to the detriment of my own career but I’ve always been proud of my voice and the work I’ve put in along with the impact I’ve had in this profession even if some club owners might not like how honest and transparent I am. About 7 years ago I started voice acting and film/commercial acting and I absolutely love both of those as acting is my true passion. I always say comedy is my job but my heart will always be with acting. Long story long I’m really good at comedy but even better at being a human being.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has never been smooth haha. I’ve dealt with club owners burning down their club for insurance money so me and the other comics get bounced checks. Every kind of non-violent racism you can think of I’ve dealt with it, all over America. One thing nobody warns you about is how many married couples will try to take you home with them while you’re on the road Haha! But my biggest battles have been with the industry itself. You’d have to be blind to not see that stand up comedy is an extremely white male dominated profession. They are the names on the marquee, they are the agents and the are almost all of the club owners. It’s difficult for talented minorities, queer individuals and women to get the most basic paid opportunities so most of them quit within 5 years of starting because there is a very very thick glass ceiling in stand up. It’s extremely difficult to be a black comedian but we’re not going to complain. We’re just going to be so great that they can’t ignore us. (That’s Steve Martin’s quote not mine, I wish I came up with that)
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a professional Stand up Comedian and Actor a Voice Over Artist and a live event producer and a lover of life.
What you see is what you get with me. I think I’m most known for my brutal honesty, relentless work ethic and quick as hell wit but what sets me apart from most entertainers is there’s nothing fake about me. I never pretend to be someone I’m not or dress like someone I want to be, I’m just Mike Logan and I think people can sense that I’m genuine. To be fair I haven’t always been this way but I’ve learned a lot in my short 39 years on Earth.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
It’s a short list haha.
Angelika Lee has been there for me years as a cheerleader and business partner in my career. She’s helped me emotionally and with how to survive in the annoying world of over emotional corporate douches haha
Stu McCalister and Floyd J Phillips (RIP) gave me so much comedy knowledge and advice when none of the older comics would talk to me when I first started. I’ll always be thankful for them for that.
Brian B gave me my first stage time and I will always be in his debt.
Courtney Failer is the best mentor I could have asked for. She helped me find my voice in the business world allowing me to crossover from just being an entertainer to understanding and building my own brand
Don’t Tell Comedy. Being a producer for one of the most popular live comedy producers in America for 5 and a half years taught me every, single, lesson about working in large scale entertainment companies. Good and bad.
