Today we’d like to introduce you to Micheal Darrisaw.
Hi Micheal, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started by cutting hair at first. First thing I ever got paid for.
Used that to get my job at a sneaker boutique in Birmingham Mi called Revive, I cut the owner’s hair two days after I met him. Never got my license so I learned how to be a salesman for the store. I was going to cut hair in the store originally.
Worked at Revive for years. Became a buyer after a few and participated in the fashion weeks, showrooms, business trips, etc. Working at Revive was a tough but a great experience in total.
Quit there and started personal shopping and wardrobe styling. Took my black book* from the store and told the guys why I left and what I was trying to do for myself. They believed in me! Draymond Green, Trevor Ariza, and Michael Kidd Gilchrist were all some of the first guys to give me a shot.
Started a brand, Second nature. Inspired by anime and manga, the two things that truly got me into fashion. No inventory now, the brand has been on pause. Back soon!
Like a year and a half removed from Revive, I started DJing while I still got my clients styling. Just as tired and frustrated with the nightlife scene here. I love Detroit and wanted so much more for my people. 98% of the DJs playing the same music you hear on the radio, came across as lazy to me. Especially after all the fashion week parties and traveling I’ve experienced from working at Revive. I had to be the change I wanted to see though, I hate when people complain and do nothing. Couldn’t be that guy!
Fast forward, I was asked to take over Thursday night at Bosco in Ferndale Mi. I took it! To me, this is the perfect way to really affect the nightlife scene here and really be the change. I can pick the DJs and charge what I want at the door. Really curate it in any way I want. So that’s what we did. I and my partner G knew I couldn’t do it alone. Shoutout to G he really holds it down.
“Good 4 You” are the brand. Every Thursday at Bosco! The only spot that rotates four DJs Every week and gives new DJs the platform to show what they got. Really became a safe haven for DJs to be creative with an open-minded crowd and has become crucial for a lot of DJs who come spin development moving forward.
Recently two months ago I just got hired at Somerset Mall to be a freelance personal stylist for the mall. After working with most professional athletes as a stylist I wanted to work with more everyday people with the luxury to afford a personal styling experience.
Just started managing this artist. Amazing young artist from Detroit. New for me but I really believe this guy is the one and here to support and make sure he is on the right track.
I’m a Golden Drip ambassador. Best smoke from here to Cali. The long* way!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Na never
Betting on myself after I stopped working revive. Really standing on my ten toes and putting in the work I had to was super tough and still is.
The struggles and the journey are the best part though, right?
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
