Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Shafran
Melissa , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started out as the banquet coordinator at CityFlatsHotel Port Huron in August 2022 while going to school for my bachelor’s degree in business administration in management. The position of general manager came up and with my previous experience as a team leader and over 15 years working in hospitality, I decided to put my name in and take on the role.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are always obstacles to overcome when moving out of your comfort zone. While transitioning to the position of general manager, I was finishing my degree so learning how to balance the responsibilities of school, work, and family was a challenge. I have worked hard to get where I am today and challenges regularly occur in this industry and in life, but I have an amazing support system within and outside of the workplace that I can rely on.

I specialize in both hospitality and business management and the strength of my team is one of the things I am most proud of. They regularly impress me with their creativity as well as their dedication to creating genuine and positive experiences for all of our guests. As a solutions-driven individual, I believe my empathy sets me apart from others and contributes to my success as a leader. In my day-to-day, I balance the responsibilities of managing the hotel and cafe as well as overseeing our talented events team.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We have many outlets here at CityFlatsHotel where visitors and community members alike can engage with us. Not only are we located in the heart of downtown Port Huron, making us a premier travel destination, but with our hotel, cafe, banquet center, and several event spaces we can deliver a well-rounded and one-of-a-kind experience for our guests. Companies can hold business meetings in our conference room, couples can have their dream wedding in our historic ballroom, or someone who works downtown can pop into our cozy cafe and enjoy lunch in a comfortable space overlooking the Black River.
