Life & Work with Mark Lyndell Mathews

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Lyndell Mathews.

Hi Mark, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
In 2018 my friend Iulia Fratila Ph.D. student in the Recreational Sport and Tourism Leisure Studies Department sent me an email about a volunteer opportunity with the Young Olympians program. Connected with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Boys and Girls Club. The Young Olympian program was to educate young adults to build skills and development and improve human quality of life. I volunteered with Monique Martinez, Sara Relly, Patrick Hill, and Wonjun Cho. We were able to implement new ideas of educating young adults to build skill development and promoting healthy habits, teaching goodness to improve the human quality of life in their community with art and sport. In March 2019, I volunteered with Wonjun for the University of Illinois Wheelchair basketball tournament. During the Pandemic, I was able to volunteer at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center in Indianapolis. I’ll tell you this at the age of fifteen I could feel my energy shift when I spoke with my mother about writing a book about my life. She laughed and said what are you going to write about you have no experiences.

Before I release my first “Zine a small circulation publication of original or appropriated text and images.” I wanted to understand the importance of details. Let me remind you this was very difficult in making sure I released the negative forces around me to finish the zine project on a positive note. Very GRATEFUL and blessed to be working with the ultra-talented creative director Aubin Dyer and the GREAT editor Kara Kamenec. Brain F. O’Neil who is currently a Doctoral Student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Department of Sociology went the extra mile in using his time and energy into showing me the levels of details in creating my first zine called FLUSH Enormity!!! Organic lived experiences through cultural lens and creating a reality through mental health, art, and literature?QuestionMark? is a non-fiction magical roller coaster memoir book under the legal name FLUSH Publishing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My belief is pressure only applies to people who aren’t prepared.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in having conversations about mental heath. Most proud of myself for forgiving myself! Self-growth and self-reflection have help me grow from past experiences, learning through people and literature. I appreciate you joining me on this journey for I hold myself accountable for understanding connection and connecting (MBS)Mind Body & Spirit. I’ve learned to focus and use my energy in a positive controlled consistent space this how I set myself apart.
