Life & Work with Liz Maritz of Downtown TC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Maritz.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started Surfaces because I wanted to create more than just an art supply store and or art studio—I wanted a space where people felt welcome to explore, connect and create without intimidation and have access to high quality art supplies. After 23 years of running a big box retailor store, I saw the need for a place that blended retail, workshops, and gallery vibes with warmth and transparency. I noticed that Traverse city needed a community space that was welcoming to all and would provide a place where all artists of different levels could buy their art supplies and be able to create at the same time.

So, I built it. From the paint bar to the coffee station, every detail was designed to spark joy and make creativity approachable. I’m proud to support local artists, host unforgettable events, and offer experiences that bring people together. Surfaces is my way of turning passion into purpose. I feel like the community has already started to embrace this space and I look forward to continuing growing the space to fit the needs of our community.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges I faced was securing a loan as a single woman without needing a co-signer. On top of that, the construction phase brought unexpected costs—especially when it came to building out the bathrooms and mechanical room. Those expenses were higher than I had budgeted for, and the extended timeline pushed our grand opening back by three months. I had hoped to open in May, but we officially launched in July.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
