Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly J.
Hi Kelly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a thing for making other people look and feel better! As a kid I enjoyed spending hours in the shop with my mom and sister getting beauty services for holidays. As I got older I began doing hair, eyebrows and makeup for friends and family. I worked corporate jobs even earned a degree but nothing topped the feeling of being able to give someone the gift of glam and earn residuals doing it! After being laid off from a desk job, I decided I wanted to further my beauty career and earned my esthetician license and several brow/lash/makeup certifications. I immediately stepped out on faith and opened my shop where I’ve been owner/operator for 13 years. During this time I’ve hosted classes, one on one trainings, Zoom meetings, started networking marketing, hosted and been on panels for business and beauty conferences. I currently teach Fall and Spring semester cohorts at a local community college. I host 2 communities, one for those who have encountered obstacles in life that may have taken them down a path they didn’t plan for but they’re leaning not on their own understanding and still building to become better called BAE, and another for married couples called Better Together. This spring I will also begin continuing my own education to earn my official instructors license in esthetics.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a long road…not easy, but not hard. Doing what I love is the reward. I have learned to incorporate my faith, prayer life and Gods plan into my business. This has helped me tremendously. Outside of that I would encourage every beauty business owner to educate themselves about credit, customer service, client retention, back office details, time and bill management and things of that nature
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am one of Metro Detroit’s BROW GOATS! I specialize in eyebrow techniques such as waxing, shaping, tinting, and microshading. I also do quick glam lash techniques like individuals, clusters and custom lash strips. I provide these services for clients and I also teach clients how to maintain between appointments. I also provide soft and quick glam makeup services for my next level glam
girlies! I service wedding parties and small groups. I also have a team of ladies who work in my 2 salon locations who I often refer out for hair, nails, makeup, lash and skin care. We even have a small boutique ran by my partner Brandi in the Be Diff family.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
It’s never been good or bad luck for me, only what God has for me or has protected me from.
