Today we’d like to introduce you to Jena Buttery
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was young, my grandparents and mom were passionate about photography and making videos. I still have one of the cameras my mom used for those classic home videos we all grew up with. My grandfather also always had a camera on hand. He and my grandma gifted me a pink Vtech camera. I loved it. I brought it with me everywhere and pretended to be a vlogger or make movies. I soon started making real YouTube videos on my cell phone and took pictures of everything (still do). Once I got into high school, I was able to take classes that pertained to this interest. I was in Broadcasting and Yearbook, and did a Media Communications program as well. At first I wanted to study film, but went into Marketing instead. While I was in school and interning, I had friends and family that wanted or needed photos done, so I got a taste of what it was like to do lifestyle photography, and fell in love, so I pursued it into the small business that it is today!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a small business owner is not easy, especially when you’re starting up. I am still learning as I go, and making mistakes as I find the right ways to do things or what works for me. My biggest struggle is finding people willing to work with me as I am learning, and being easy on myself. I can compare myself to others a lot or get in my head. I see a lot of amazing photographers and business owners thriving, making their work their own, and getting client after client, and I am trying to do the same. I often will feel less than because I might not be doing the same as bigger photographers, but I need to remember that I’m in a very different phase than they might be, and I’m on my own path, not theirs.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a lifestyle photographer based here in West Michigan. I do mostly everything from branding, couples/engagements, family, senior/solo sessions, as well as events or shows! I’m also starting to get into photographing weddings.
I am very proud of the growth I have had, not only as a photographer or business owners, but as an individual. I’ve gone out of my comfort zone in a lot of ways by pursuing all of this, from meeting new people, to directing, to being more confident, stern, sure of myself. My work and the visions that my clients and I have and seeing those come to life are truly a gift. But I think that so many other aspects of this industry — the connections, the community, the experiences — truly make it special and why I am so grateful to be part of it.
I believe my ability to be very flexible and truly make anyone’s visions or wishes come true as much as possible is what sets me apart. I understand that not everyone has the budget for photo sessions, not everyone has the time, or not everyone knows exactly what they’re looking for. My hope with working with you is to be there for every step, and whatever circumstances you’re going through, those will not hinder your ability to have amazing photos and capture your unforgettable moments.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is huge! Go on social media, go to events, talk to everyone around you. One of the biggest reasons I believe I’m where I’m at now is because everyone in my life knows about my business or my love for photography. I’m not shy about sharing all my photos and progress on Instagram or Facebook. Additionally, I’m not scared of reaching out and asking for advice, tips, or anything from any photographer I’m on social media with or know personally. If they could give me even a little bit of help, I reach out.
Additionally, putting yourself out there is huge. Throwing your name in a community group page on Facebook, joining wedding groups, etc. No matter how many times you may do it, there’s always gonna be someone out there who is looking for what you have to offer. They’ll never find you if you never put yourself out there. Be brave, be strong, and be confident.
