Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmine Young.
Hi Jazmine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Jazmine Young is a powerhouse vocalist from the east side of Detroit, known for her rich tone, soulful delivery, and dynamic range. A classically trained singer with deep gospel roots, Jazmine brings a unique fusion of R&B, neo-soul, jazz, and gospel to every stage she steps on. Her sound is shaped by legends like Whitney Houston, Jazmine Sullivan, Mary Mary, PJ Morton, and Erykah Badu, and grounded in years of experience performing in church choirs, school ensembles, and live showcases across Detroit and beyond. Raised in a musically gifted family, Jazmine got her start singing gospel at church events alongside her siblings, under the guidance of her mother, a choir director. She honed her craft at the Detroit School of Arts, where she learned to sight-read music and embraced genres like classical and jazz. By 2019, she knew music was more than a gift—it was her calling. Jazmine has accomplished many goals such as singing in the Motown Amplify competition in 2025 and singing on the news with Local 4 for the Super Singer contest. Currently, Jazmine is focusing on creating original music.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Last year, I battled with things in my personal life that hindered me from pursuing my career. Some of the things that I struggled with were trying to find work-life balance, going through a breakup, and financial stress. Looking back at what I’ve been through, you would’ve thought that I was starring in a Tyler Perry movie, lol. I’m grateful that God had His hands on me and that He has delivered me from that troubling time.
Musically, I’ve struggled with being comfortable on stage and singing in front of a crowd.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been teaching as a Paraprofessional at an elementary/middle school for 4 years. I specialize in working in small groups teaching reading and math. I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built with not only the students and staff, but the parents. I graduated from the school that I work at and it feels good to know that I’m giving back to my community.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was an introverted extrovert. I was very shy at first but once I felt comfortable and safe, I showed my personality. If I had to describe my personality, I would say theatrical with a splash of humor. One of my favorite memories, is singing with my siblings. We learned a lot from each other and helped find our voices together. My mom taught us how to harmonize which built the foundation that I still utilize today.
