Today we’d like to introduce you to Janay Stevens
Hi Janay, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey began with a deep passion for empowering others, particularly women and youth, to overcome challenges and realize their full potential. Early on, I found myself drawn to community work and mentorship, which led me to launch P.U.S.H. with Janay (Pray Until Something Happens) as a platform for motivation, support, and growth.
I started small, organizing local meetups and sharing motivational content online. Over time, I realized the impact of providing safe spaces for open discussion and personal development, especially for women navigating difficult life circumstances. This inspired me to expand P.U.S.H. into a larger initiative, including mentorship programs, podcasts, and a social networking platform for women called P.U.S.H. Sistas.
Through hard work and a strong vision, I’ve connected with many people across Detroit and beyond, establishing myself as a leader in community empowerment. Today, I’m focused on creating a P.U.S.H. Empowerment Consulting to offer even more resources to the community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Some of the challenges I faced included balancing personal and professional life, dealing with self-doubt, and overcoming financial obstacles when first starting out. I also had to navigate difficult decisions, like walking away from organizations where I didn’t align with the values or integrity of leadership. Each hurdle taught me the importance of staying true to my mission, maintaining resilience, and surrounding myself with people who share my vision. These struggles have strengthened my passion and commitment to uplifting others, especially through my work with P.U.S.H.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m the founder of P.U.S.H. with Janay, where I focus on empowering communities through mentorship, social-emotional learning, and restorative practices. I specialize in working with youth and women, offering personal growth programs, mentorship, and community service projects that promote self-awareness, emotional resilience, and leadership. What I’m most proud of is the impact I’ve made in helping others overcome adversity and reach their potential.
What sets me apart is my holistic approach integrating emotional wellness, personal development, and community-building all in one. I’m known for creating safe, supportive environments where people feel heard, valued, and inspired. My passion for helping others thrive, paired with my real-world experience, drives everything I do.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about Detroit is its resilience and sense of community. The people here are incredibly resourceful and determined, always working to uplift each other despite challenges. Detroit’s rich culture, history, and creative energy inspire me, and I’m proud to be part of a city that values both its past and future.
What I like least is the disparity in resources and opportunities, especially in certain neighborhoods. There are areas that still lack access to essential services, education, and economic development. However, this motivates me even more to work toward positive change and ensure that everyone in our city has the chance to thrive.
