Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamar Lockhart.
Hi Jamar, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jamar Lockhart, born and raised on the westside of Detroit, MI. Growing up. my dad had the greatest influence on me as an artist. I felt if I could impress him, I was good. During my formative years as a student in the Detroit Public School district is where my love for art was formed. I loved to draw wrestlers and cartoon characters. I was introduced to portraits by my dad and uncle, Derrick. I then began to draw portraits of my favorite athletes and musicians.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t been smooth by any stretch. The beauty, however has been in the struggles and the lessons learned from overcoming the struggles. My struggles early on consisted of finding my voice as an artist. As a multi-dimensional artist, it was difficult to land on one discipline. Navigating that struggle and carving out my own lane although, difficult, has been the most rewarding.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a fine artist that explores the realms of oil and acrylic paints. I use acrylic paint for my abstract paintings and oil paint for my portrait pieces. My work can be described as bold and colorful. I am most proud of my evolution as an artist. From my subject matter to my technique, I keep finding ways to evolve. I believe the ability to go between abstract work and portrait work sets me apart as an artist. Most artists are masters in their crafts, where I see myself as a jack of all trades if you will.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think staying true to my work and not compromising my work has led to my success. It’s easy to be influenced by trends, but I’m more influenced by my life and experiences that fuel my passion in my works.
