Life & Work with Jael Caliman of Southfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jael Caliman.

Hi Jael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started when I could hold a pencil, I’ve always had a love for art. I guess part of it is in my blood as my grandfather would teach me and my sister how to draw

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not always, social media is able to perfectly show other artists “making it,” while my works are / were still taking off. I’d compare myself to others, as they spend their days doing art, I always wanted to do that only and not have a part time job to juggle with.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in using items most people overlook—like recycled cardboard or even foam balls—as part of my process. For me, these materials represent transformation: taking what might be seen as disposable and showing the world the beauty and value hidden inside them.

I’m known for my cinematic, moody painting style and for the process itself becoming part of the storytelling.
A lot of people connect with my videos because they see not just the final art, but the emotional energy that goes into it—whether I’m rolling paint across cardboard, stirring foam balls like pigment, or building layers that feel textured, raw, and intentional.

What I’m most proud of is that my work resonates with people emotionally.

I use untraditional tools and textures to spark curiosity.
• My materials carry meaning nothing is random.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I always had an interest in interior design, and I was definitely the one with the kid with straight A’s. Growing up I was pretty quiet and still am
