Today we’d like to introduce you to Hugh Anderson.
Hi Hugh, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Like many photographers, I started with a camera and a passion for creating images, but what really drew me in was working with people. Over the years I realized that the best photographs aren’t just technically good—they help people see themselves with confidence.
That led me to build Hugh Anderson Photography in Bloomfield Hills, focusing on professional headshots and corporate event photography. Today I work with everyone from individuals updating their LinkedIn profile to Fortune 500 companies, medical residents, and organizations hosting conferences and executive events.
I’ve been fortunate to photograph projects for companies like Stellantis, Magna Seating, SAE International, and many others.
The business has grown steadily, but not without challenges. Like most small business owners, I’ve worn every hat—photographer, editor, marketer, accountant, salesperson, and customer service representative. Every opportunity has been earned one relationship at a time. My philosophy has always been simple: make the experience easy, efficient, and even enjoyable. Most people don’t love being photographed, so helping them relax is just as important as lighting and camera settings.
One of the things I’m most proud of is that many of my clients come back year after year and refer me to colleagues and friends. Whether I’m photographing a single executive headshot or covering a multi-day corporate conference, my goal is always the same: create images that help my clients look their best and represent their organizations professionally.
I’m still growing the business and always looking for the next challenge. Every new client is an opportunity to build another long-term relationship, and after all these years, I still enjoy meeting new people and telling their stories through photography.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been struggles. Coved was a huge issue, and that decimated my business. It was very much a rebuild from there as I stopped all my wedding photography, and went a different direction into corporate work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that great photography is rarely about the camera. It’s about trust. Whether someone loves having their picture taken or absolutely dreads it, my first job is to make them feel comfortable. Once that happens, everything else falls into place.
I’m drawn to photography because every assignment is different. One day I might be helping someone make a great first impression with a headshot, and the next I could be documenting hundreds of people at a conference. I enjoy the challenge of adapting, solving problems, and delivering images that people are genuinely excited to use.
At the end of the day, success isn’t measured by how many photos I take—it’s measured by whether the images help my clients achieve their goals. If they look at the finished work and say, “That’s exactly what we needed,” then I’ve done my job.
