Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Ulewicz.
Hi Holly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Unique to many of the yogis and yoginis I’ve met over nearly 20 years of practice my journey with yoga and meditation started relatively young and seemed to pursue me more than I pursued it. I trained as a classical ballerina from 3-17 years old and when I was in middle school my primary ballet teacher took a 200 hour training and taught yoga for the studio I was training with. I found this new approach to moving my body so interesting that I began renting books and DVDs about yoga from the local library (circa 2007). Some of my earliest experiences with yoga were Kundalini DVDs.
As life marched on, I began to understand what called people to their mat. A series of growing pains and a mental health crisis in 2010 left me longing to learn how to relax. How to breathe. I tried many medications, saw chiropractors, went to individual and group therapy but the relief I found on a yoga mat at my local gym was worlds beyond any other therapy I had tried. After a lot of a deep suffering I could finally take a breath again. Within one calendar year, with the aid of a psychiatrist, I was able to get off of 6 mental health medications and had a newfound passion for asana (yoga postures). I understood that you could change your thoughts and I was a completely new person.
Off to college I went, to make my family proud. Despite encouragement to study dance and kinesiology from my mother I choose to complete a business degree at Wayne State University. Lots of things came with my college years, a wicked substance abuse issue and an accidental job as a yoga teacher. One evening, I found myself in a debate with the operations director at the Mort Harris Recreation Center, after staff asked me to leave because I had accidentally struck a participant with a hula hoop. “Hula hooping is really popular” I urged the director to understand – “you are excluding a fun form of exercise” I pleaded. And just like that I became a hula hoop instructor at the college recreation center. And a few mother later, after being asked if I could teach yoga too, I begrudgingly accepted the call. Teaching was a new level of healing, and my urge to not screw it up with my substance abuse led me to commit to a life of sobriety in 2015. I completed my 200 hour training in July of 2015, my sobriety date is November 16th 2015 – the connection is not a coincidence.
For 5 years I taught at night like many teachers working in the “real” world. I was good at my career in Accounting and celebrated by my team at imageOne. I loved my job and the people I worked with, but then this work started calling again, After the sudden death of a friend in recovery I had a powerful and persistent connection with his spirit on the other side. I relayed messages to his wife, family and even delivered his widow roses on her 5 year sobriety anniversary (John’s idea of course). I have had encounters with spirits since I was a little girl but I believe a few years removed from alcohol intensified my natural connection to spirit. These encounters left me full of questions and quite frankly a little annoyed. Will I ever live anywhere without a chatty ghost??
In 2019, just a few months before the globe shut down, my life started to change radically, again. I had been competing in bikini competitions for a few years, working out very intensively and dieting very strictly. It was my identity at the time. One day I woke up feeling off, I didn’t go to the gym for a week and my gut told me to schedule a same day doctor’s appointment. A biopsy, a lot of prayer and physically discomfort later I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called Lichen Scleroses. I felt out of control, scared shitless and knew I needed healing. This led me to study Reiki with the D’Rose Institute in 2020. My life slowed down a lot. I started to really think harder about what it meant to live a productive and successful life. Things only got softer and sweeter from there. Within a year of that diagnosis, reiki and the connection it helped me shape with spirit allowed me to manage this rare disease without Western medications. I was very inspired by the way reiki healed my body, mind and spirit and knew I needed to leave my Accounting job to provide health and healing practices full time. In 2020, I launched Divine Unity Wellness and have had an amazing journey that continues to ripen, expand and bloom with time.
I’ve been blessed to support 10+ businesses in the Metro Detroit area who provide non-profit and for profit services for health and healing. I am especially passionate about bringing these practices to those healing from substance use disorder and to mothers, babies and women with fertility challenges. This year I am working to launch new non-profit programming for kids reiki and sound healing. One thing has been for certain over these past two decades of practice. Yoga and Reiki call for me, and me and everyone I am blessed to help are better because of it. I remain especially passionate about creating accessible spaces for yoga, reiki and acupuncture, because I know how important it is to be able to use these tools when you cannot afford them. I believe that all beings deserve a journey of healing and growth, regardless of health, race, gender, disability or socioeconomic status.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road to growth is an easy ride. I have surely had times where I have questioned everything. I think I was most challenged trying to understand how I would run my business after having kids. I love my children and strive to give them a lot of my time, energy and nurturing spirit. However, I am not a whole person without the work that I do. I had to let me path be my own and learn to not compare myself to anyone else. Each mother has her own needs and ideal circumstances in motherhood, none are better than someone else’s. I understand now the best thing you can do for yourself and your children is to be a mother in the way that fits you.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We primary offerings for clients are yoga therapy, reiki and AcuDetox (acupuncture). Yoga therapy is a form of yoga that meets individuals inside of physical and mental health challenges. It allows people who might not feel at home in a traditional mat class an opportunity to access yoga in a way that is safe and effective for them. I am particularly passionate about working with patients with cancer and substance use disorder.
Reiki is a spiritual healing that is transmitting from Heaven/Source/the Universe through the hands of a practitioner. In my sessions I provide insight on the root cause of illnesses and energy stagnation, use the energy work to get energy moving, and end every session with sound healing and spiritual counseling. The counseling provides clients the opportunity to get involved in the work and understand themselves better.
AcuDetox is a form of acupuncture that is specialized for aiding trauma and substance abuse. In sessions 5 acupuncture needles are placed in each ear that remain during a guided meditation and a period of rest. This therapy is a wonderful way for people who have a difficult time sitting quietly to be able to rest and connect with meditation. I offer this in groups and 1-1.
My personal connection and the sense of safety that I strive to bring into my groups set me apart.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is swinging from the willow tree at my family’s reunion campsite. I led a meditation about trees and I always visualize myself at that tree. We bought a home this last year and I plan to plant a willow tree by creek so my children might enjoy the same bliss.
