Life & Work with Ginny McCallum of Ellsworth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginny McCallum.

Hi Ginny, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
For Gregg and Ginny McCallum, the journey to owning A Matter of Taste at Tapawingo began long before they held the keys, 14 years ago (2011). While still culinary students—she at Macomb Community College and he at Kendall College—the pair made their first trek to the tiny town of Ellsworth. That visit sparked a lifelong passion, turning into an annual pilgrimage to the shores of Saint Clair Lake. Soon after that visit they made a plan to move north and raise a family. In 2008 they leased a space downtown Charlevoix to open “A Matter of Taste”. Offering sandwiches, pastries, and catering services for destination weddings.
Today, the McCallums have transformed that inspiration into a reality, breathing new life into the legendary estate while honoring its storied past.
A Legacy Reimagined
Once a nationally acclaimed culinary landmark for 29 years, Tapawingo—a Native American name meaning “House of Joy and Peace”—has been thoughtfully reimagined. The McCallums have refurbished the space into a sophisticated, airy venue that balances its historic charm with modern elegance.
The Venue Experience
Now one of Northern Michigan’s most coveted wedding destinations, the property offers an unparalleled backdrop for “I do”:
The Transformation: An open-concept interior design that seamlessly hosts high-end events and celebrations.
The Waterfront: A tranquil ceremony space nestled along the shoreline, accessible via a stunning triple-tier pergola patio.
The Amenities: A charming lakefront bridal cottage provides a private sanctuary for the wedding party.
The Reception:
A grand 40’ x 60’ Sailcloth tent featuring a luxurious Italian marble floor and a “tiki-style” outdoor bar for a touch of lakeside whimsy.

Where History Meets Hospitality
A Matter of Taste at Tapawingo isn’t just a venue; it’s a continuation of a legacy. By blending the picturesque natural beauty of Ellsworth with the sophisticated hospitality the McCallums have championed for years, they have ensured that every guest experiences exactly what the name promises: true joy and peace.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The only obstacle we face is the weather in NW Michigan. It’s unpredictable sometimes and not always guaranteed. But, we have a plan in place for everyone to insure that it will not affect the perfect wedding.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
