Today we’d like to introduce you to Evaline Selaty.
Hi Evaline, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thanks so much for talking with me, Voyage Michigan! Most people know me by my nickname, Evie, and I am a professional freelance makeup artist.
Makeup was my first love! My mom used to wake me up extra early so we could do our makeup together before school. She was an artist at heart too and we bonded through beauty & fashion. At ten years old, I used to pretend to set up shop in my room accepting clients and now I have my own business doing just that.
I knew from a very young age that this was the path for me, so I enrolled in beauty school. I graduated as a confident and more accomplished artist and was offered a job at a Nordstrom Beauty counter as a Business Manager. I was truly able to hone my craft by having the opportunity to practice on people of all ages and skin tones.
I slowly built my clientele and started taking extra gigs on the side in commercial and bridal work, eventually leading to editorial and even runway! I knew I was finally ready to take the next step and transition to a full-time freelance artist. So began Evaline Artistry, LLC.
Now, I work and travel full-time and get some awesome opportunities to grow as an artist and meet new people. I’m always ready for the next adventure!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, I was lucky to stumble on my passion so early. But anything worth pursuing will have its fair share of obstacles. I used to work at a nursing home full-time and would attend beauty school at night. This usually meant taking four buses each day between work and school. I met my greatest challenge yet when my entire family moved to Arizona for work. I was so committed to this dream that I had to stay here in Michigan and finish what I’d started alone. Fortunately, I had some incredible friends that helped me get through those first few years on my own! I push forward out of my love for artistry and the connections I’ve made in my make-up chair. Find what makes you push forward no matter what and give it all you’ve got!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Of course! I specialize in soft glam and editorial beauty. I like to create looks in a safe space that anyone can feel comfortable and relaxed in. I pride myself on creating a fun and friendly environment. While I love the one-on-one interactions in my chair, I also love the chaotic, high-energy whirlwind of the fashion world. No matter the situation, it always comes back to connections.
I found that much of my passion for makeup comes from connecting with people. Artistry is just my medium for that
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Having a supportive artist friend group has really helped me along the way! Sometimes social media can be overwhelming as an artist, so I think it’s important to ground yourself among your peers. I love giving good energy and uplifting other artists around me. We are all family!
