Life & Work with Devan Rucker of Monroe Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devan Rucker.

Devan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It started with a hot dog stand.
Not long ago, you would have found me behind the counter of my family friend’s hot dog stand Monroe’s Original Hotdog — keeping things moving, keeping people fed. But somewhere between the grill and the counter, an idea started cooking too.
I started making lighthearted and humorous ad videos to promote the business. What began as fun, low-stakes content to drum up customers turned into something nobody saw coming — the videos went viral.

The attention those videos generated sparked a question that would reshape my entire future: if I can do this for a hot dog stand, what else can I do? The answer became The Development Group, a full-service media production company handling everything from promotional videos to full event coverage. If it involves a camera, The Development Group does it.

But I’m not the type to stop at building something for myself. I looked around Monroe County and noticed a gap — actually, several gaps. Local athletes were out here grinding, competing, winning, and nobody was telling their stories. So I built a platform to do just that. The Monroe County Sports Network, MCSN, launched as a local slice of ESPN — dedicated entirely to the athletes of Monroe County. Friday night lights, court battles, personal achievements — finally getting the coverage they deserve.

Then I looked a little further. What about the kid who just landed the lead in the school play? The student journalist running the newspaper? The robotics team that just won regionals? They deserve a spotlight too. That thinking gave birth to the Monroe County News Network, MCNN — a channel dedicated to school events, local business openings, and the community moments that usually slip through the cracks of traditional media.

Both MCSN and MCNN are funded by local businesses and community members who recognize the value of what we’re building — and in return, they get advertising and media exposure that puts them directly in front of the Monroe County audience they care about most. It’s a model built on community, sustained by community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting from scratch with zero clients and zero guarantees — that was the reality from day one. One of the biggest obstacles was simply learning as we go. There was no roadmap, no blueprint. We made mistakes, we hit setbacks, and we had to figure it out as we went.

The other major challenge was getting people to believe in the vision and make the investment.

But what kept us grounded was our faith. We truly believed God put this idea in our heads for a reason, and we trusted that He would bring it to life. We held onto that through every hard moment, and slowly but surely, it all started to come together.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The Development Group is our media production company — we handle video production for businesses and organizations, everything from promotional content to full event coverage. That’s the foundation of everything. Then we have the Monroe County Sports Network, MCSN, which is all about covering local sports locally. Game day highlights, recaps, player interviews, coach interviews — we give Monroe County athletes the coverage they deserve right in their own backyard. And then there’s the Monroe County News Network, MCNN, which is good news journalism. Business highlights, local events, community moments — all delivered in social media form. Three different lanes but all under the same mission of creating quality content and keeping our community connected.

What are we known for? We’re known for showing up. For MCSN, we’re known to be at a game somewhere around the monroe county area every night. On the MCNN side, people know that if there’s a great event going on, we’re going to be there to cover it. And with The Development Group, people know they can reach out to us for any video need — whether that’s drone footage, camera work, or fresh branding ideas for their business. We’ve built a reputation around being reliable, being present, and delivering quality.

What I’m most proud of is that we get to do this full time with a team. This was never a get rich quick scheme — this is something we are genuinely passionate about and getting to wake up every day and bring people’s visions to life is something I don’t take for granted. We’re proud that we’ve been able to provide jobs for people. We’re proud that through our internship program we can create real opportunities for kids who may have a passion for broadcasting or the media world and just need a place to develop it. We get to shine a light on local athletes, businesses, local events, and local people who deserve to be seen. I honestly think we have the best job in the world.

What sets us apart is simple — we’re local. Our slogans are local news covered locally and local sports covered locally and we mean that. We’re not a firm from out of town coming in to make money off of local businesses and the games we’re highlighting. These are our neighbors. These are people we’ve grown up with. My elementary school gym teacher is still out here reffing basketball games. Being able to connect with this community in a different way after all these years, that’s something no outside company can replicate. This is personal for us and I think people feel that.

Any big plans?
Whatever the Lord has in store for us I’m ready for it. I hope it’s expansion. It’s a big dream but I truly believe there could be an news network and sports network in every county. We’re not looking to be the next ABC or NBC but with the right connections this could be a copy and paste model that works anywhere. Right now we’re continuing to grow here in Monroe County, recruiting more high school interns, and building on the scholarship program we’ve already started. We’ve also already begun expanding into the Downriver area and that’s just the first step. The goal is to keep pushing into surrounding regions while continuing to create real opportunities for young people in media along the way. But at the end of the day I’m willing to go as far as the Lord will take me.
