Today we’d like to introduce you to Commissioner Nick Fiani
Hi Commissioner Nick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since I can remember, I have held a desire to make a positive, lasting impact within my community and throughout Michigan. Early on, I discovered that public service is a remarkable opportunity to help others and assist in shaping the future. Born in Michigan, I graduated from Detroit Country Day School with Summa Cum Laude honors. One of my favorite memories from high school is winning the soccer State Championship with my brother, Dr. Brian Fiani, and receiving All State All Academic recognition.
Following high school, I went on to attend the University of Michigan where I earned University Honors, along with a Varsity Letter, and graduated within 2.5 years. Shortly thereafter, it was brought to my attention that Brighton Area Schools was enduring financially difficult times, and I was encouraged by well-known members of the community to run for a position on its board. At 24 years old, I was elected to the Brighton Area Schools Board of Education, and at 26 years old, I was honored to be the youngest person ever appointed President of a Michigan public school district board of education. When I took my seat on the board, the district had an accumulated debt of $8.5 million, but within only two years, I was able to help lead the elimination of this debt and build up over $1 million in positive fund balance. Then, in 2022, I received the distinct honor of being elected to the Livingston County Board of Commissioners.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a smooth road, for which I am very grateful and owe to my parents and to God. In my opinion, one challenge that I have had to navigate over the years is the biased and inaccurate coverage by local media outlets. This, however, has made me a stronger person and even more excited to tackle the challenges that lay ahead for our community, state, and nation.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
With great appreciation, I was elected to the Livingston County Board of Commissioners in 2022. In 2024, with 57.5% of the vote, I was re-elected Commissioner. Presently, I serve as Vice Chair of the board and as Chair of the Finance and Asset Management Committee. Additionally, I have the privilege of serving as a member of the Courts, Public Safety, and Infrastructure Development Committee, Retiree Health Care Plan Board of Trustees, Retirement Plan Advisory Committee, and the Michigan Counties Workers’ Compensation Fund Board of Trustees. I am excited to share that for my work I have been honored as a recipient of the Constitutional Stewardship Award and the Tenth Amendment Award.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I have so many incredible memories. Growing up, my favorite childhood memories revolve around spending time on the lake with my parents and brother, water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, and jet skiing, along with playing sports, including soccer, basketball, swimming, golf, and snow skiing.
