Life & Work with Caitlin Eyk of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Eyk.

Caitlin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my career in hair in Royal Oak right out of high school. I then moved to Grand Rapids in 2011 after meeting my now husband at Electric Forest Music Festival. I was young and crazy but it’s panned out well.

I worked at a series of somewhat traumatizing salons around the city before I took my career into my own hands. I’ve kept a few close friends under my wings. My goal was never to be in a vacuum and after a few years I had outgrown my suite. My buddy Francie and I moved into a conjoined space three years ago and we just can’t seem to stop outgrowing spaces.

So the universe aligned and presented us with a perfect opportunity for expansion. Oro will be opening late this summer.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Expanding my business started very organically. I practice yoga at the neighboring business, Kula. When the space came up for rent it was too perfect to pass up on. My landlord at the salon suites has been so wonderful and supportive and is excited to see us grow. My new landlord at Oro has been so generous and flexible with my timeline and plans. The new space is six blocks from my house and much closer for Francie as well.

Were it not for the hoops I’ve had to jump through with the SBA and hiring a not so wonderful contractor at first, I would say it’s been smooth sailing. Luckily I’ve been approved for funding and have found some really great people to work with on finishing up the project.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a hairstylist, artist, yoga teacher, and mom. These are just a few of the hats I wear. Behind the chair I’m known for my creativity, I’m always encouraging my clients to change up their style. As an artist I dabble in paint, mixed media, jewelry And embroidery.

In all areas of my life I am most proud of seeking out and growing connections within my community. I whole heartedly believe that the world is a better place when we invest in each other and share our resources and wisdom.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is creating something that makes life better, even if just for a moment, for everyone that experiences it.
