Today we’d like to introduce you to Britney Simone.
Hi Britney, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Art has always been at the center of my life. My path has been shaped significantly by my time in sex work and by having an abortion. Both continue to inform who I am, the work I create, and my commitment to honesty and reclamation.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve struggled with a lot of shame and guilt, and I still do at times. I often find myself hiding parts of myself from the people I love. Learning to stay grounded in myself has been the most difficult.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make chalk pastel drawings, often of women in nature and sex workers in obscure landscapes. I’m really proud of the series I’ve been developing. It feels like I’ve finally reached a place where I’ve found my flow and what works best for me.
I’ve also put a lot of energy into my storytelling projects, including Stripper Stories and Abortion Stories. Both have had a meaningful impact on my community and have brought people together in ways I didn’t fully expect. What sets me apart is the intersection of my lived experiences, and how openly I translate them into my work.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Feel the fear and do it anyway
