Life & Work with Avery Warren

Today we’d like to introduce you to Avery Warren.

Hi Avery, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born May 28th, 2003, and grew up in Hazel Park for the first couple years of my life. My parents growing up never had a very sustainable relationship, so around when I was 4 or 5 years old my mother and my older sister moved to Atlanta for a job opportunity my mom had. I would say living in Atlanta for the time I did really open up my eyes to a lot of things at a young age. A lot of different paths opened up in the limited amount of time I stayed there. My mother on the other hand used to road manage for a notable singer for a while, so staying around that type of crowd at young age sparked a flame I grew for music. I love music, the freedom of imagination, the feeling of connection with others through sound, the element of being the creator of something that can hold impact. My journey with music started with dancing. Growing up in Atlanta the break-dancing scene was very popular and a couple minutes away from my house was a dance studio, so I took the chance and stared doing that. I enjoyed dancing, but something about it didn’t give me the proper creative freedom I could obtain from music. I gave the dancing down for a while and during that time my mother gave birth to my younger sibling. Being pregnant my mother couldn’t afford to be laid off while being pregnant, so we moved back to Michigan into my aunt’s old house. Atlanta was a good steppingstone for me to be able to explore and notice different elements of music and the world, but Michigan is always home. A lot of trails and tribulations occurred when I came back to Michigan though. A lot of hurt, loss, and grief. Going through those times I starting writing out my emotions out on paper which turned my to poetry, which then turned to writing raps. My love for hip hop grew instantly, and ever since I picked the notepad up, I haven’t been able to put it down. I started going to different musical camps around Michigan trying to expand my artistry which then lead me to a summer camp that Motown Records hosted for young, inspired artists. There It opened me to meeting a lot of very talented and relatable people that enlightened me how talented the city of Detroit is. I started making music with a couple of my friends from a school and started we started a music collection called “HB3”. We never came up for an explanation of “HB3” but with there being no meaning means there can be an infinite amount of meanings, therefore making the meaning of “HB3” infinite. Every day after school we would go into my friend Exoro’s basement and hang his mic in from the ceiling and record everything off our phones. I started to drop a couple songs we recorded on SoundCloud, and it got pretty solid feedback, so I then expanded from SoundCloud to other digital streaming platforms under the name GeminiChild. I’m very ambitious for what is in store and the impact I could bring for the music industry in the state of Michigan. I want continue dropping music for as long as I can and bring a positive impact to the world as long as I’m living. But only the future can guarantee what is to come.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been smooth sailing I lost a lot of family members and big impacts of my life. Around when I was twelve, my older brother got incarcerated so that weighed pretty heavy on me. On top of the pressure of switching environments was big thing also. We never had it super good at times, but gratefully are situation wasn’t as worse as others, so that’s one thing I remain humble about. I had still had clothes to wear no matter if they were raggedy, food to eat, a place to sleep most of the time not in the best environments. Dealt with a lot of internal issues within myself for a while but I’m learn how to heal and see positively throughout situations that face me.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My stage name is GeminiChild, and I started a music collective with my friend Exoro called HB3. So far, I’ve dropped two Eps and around 15 songs, and plan to release a couple more songs the rest of 2022. I have a lot of projects and ideas in store but I’m taking it one day at a time, trying to really perfect my craft. I definitely wanna start collaborating with more local artists and also start doing more performances around Michigan and eventually out of state. Detroit has a very distinct sound, so I would say my sound is very different and easy to pick apart from others. I focus on music with a lot of substance matter and also music that is very vibrant, something that makes people feel good but also leave them with a little bit of advice as well. I wanna use my voice for people that are unheard, that make them confident enough to speak up. I’m just very proud with how far I’ve come and how my love for it has never died. Some days aren’t always brighter than others, but I know that music is something I can turn to for anything I plan to do it as long as I possibly can.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Covid is terrible. Stay safe with your health and respect other people’s health. Definitely cherish your time you have because you never know when will change.
