Life & Work with Austin Ahmad of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Ahmad.

Hi Austin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Kozy started as a band on similar interests between myself (Austin) and Bill Kozy. Bill has been a local staple for decades, playing in bands the Meanies and Speedball, and working as a sound engineer for legends such as Cheap Trick and Shane MacGowan and others, and approached me about starting a project to let out a Discharge-esque steam. Over time, the band has morphed into a tribute to MC5, the Hellacopters, Thin Lizzy, the Stooges, KISS (early albums specifically), Motörhead, and so many others. Over time, we added the most dependable and dedicated drummer in Detroit, Phil Warren, and a maestro of his craft, Matt Van, into the mix to define and ensure the vision we shared can be showcased to the world.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There’s been times of struggle and tension, for sure. We have had to move on without a few very incredible musicians, and it’s never easy to go thru those situations. The single/album that’s soon to come out features our old bassist Kyle Davis, who I would like to go on record to thank and give appreciation for what we were able to create together, Also, these songs were prior to Kyle helped composed by Dan Gillies, who I also want to give special mention to. Bill and myself have always held a strong mutual vision, which has helped make us reach the heights we have today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The band has a rich history of performing and working in the music industry. Each member has a distinct touring background as performers, and some as local gig workers/touring roadies. Performance accolades include Speedball, Uncle Cracker, H.R. (Bad Brains), the Hookers, Electric Six, Acid Witch, Against the Grain, the Meanies, and many, many more. We are 4 musicians devoted to the idea of giving back to the musical community, and more over to those that take the time out of their lives to share with us. We strive to provide the escape and create the moments to anyone that comes to our shows or listens to our music. It’s why I started playing music, and the most significant reason why I continue to give all I have into this trade.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
June 29th we share the beginning of our long awaited debut to the world, and I am very thankful for those that have continued to support and follow us on this journey. I want to personally thank the venues, the promoters, the bands we have shared the stage with, and most importantly, the fans that have continually showed up. I wouldn’t be here without all of your support, comradery, and love, and I am forever grateful.
