Life & Work with Alexis & Lepa Dimovski of Shelby Township

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis & Lepa Dimovski.

Hi Alexis & Lepa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi, we’re Lepa and Alexis — the duo behind One Stop Tent Shop!

Like many of you, our lives have been a journey filled with highs, lows, and everything in between. We’ve walked through moments we wouldn’t wish upon our worst enemies, and we’ve celebrated memories that still make us smile to this day. If there is one definite truth, it’s that our history—our struggles, our lessons, and our victories—have gently shaped us into who we are today. Each experience, filled with joy or pain, is part of the journey that binds us together and reminds us of our shared strength.
One Stop Tent Shop is more than a business — it’s a piece of our story. Born from resilience and shaped by the dream of creating something meaningful, it represents every challenge we’ve overcome and every hope we hold for the future. This isn’t just what we do — it’s who we are, and a reminder that even the toughest paths can lead to something beautiful.
Lepa, my mother, is a first-generation American, born to immigrant parents from the former Yugoslavia — now known as Macedonia. Like so many before us, my family came to the United States chasing the American dream: leaving behind almost everything for a shot at a better life, full of opportunity and endless possibilities. When my grandparents, Tomislav and Stevanka, arrived in this country, they took a bold step and, together with my uncles and great-grandparents, opened McDougall Bakery in Detroit, running it with heart and determination for over 30 years. They lived right above the bakery, and the smell of fresh bread and pastries would fill the air in the neighborhood every morning.
The bakery wasn’t just a business; it was a symbol of sacrifice, community, and hard work — values that have stuck with my mother ever since and helped shape what we’re building today with One Stop Tent Shop. As the years passed, life changed — and so did our family’s path. Eventually, my family made the decision to sell the bakery and move to a safer, more stable area. With that change came new ventures, starting with Tom’s Erin Bar, followed later by The Brass Tap in Roseville. Each business brought its own set of experiences, lessons, and community connections.
But like many in the industry, they faced insurmountable challenges — staffing shortages, rising ingredient costs, and most significantly, the declining health of my grandfather. These circumstances forced my mother to take a hard look at our future, realizing it was time to step away from the fast-paced demands of the food and beverage industry and redirect her focus toward a traditional 9-to-5 role.
Unfortunately, life took some unexpected — and deeply painful — turns.
Over time, my mother regained the passion she always had for owning a small business, with the hope of building something that could one day be passed down to me and my siblings. In 2008, she opened Callaway’s Bistro in Shelby Township, Michigan — a dream built on family, tradition, and love.
But life had different plans for us. I never could have imagined how deeply the 2008 financial recession would affect our family. It wasn’t just the business that suffered — the pressure also began to break down my parents’ marriage. While my mom was fighting to save our restaurant, my grandfather’s health was declining rapidly, and eventually, he passed away. My parents’ relationship, which had been toxic for a long time, finally fell apart. In the end, we had to say goodbye to the restaurant we loved and even faced the painful loss of our home. But it was after all of this that my mother found the strength to leave — and that’s where our real story begins.
My mom and I have been on our own ever since. While my brothers moved on — starting families and building their lives — it was just the two of us, side by side. We’ve been inseparable, holding on to each other and dreaming of a better life.
I watched my mom carry the weight of the world on her shoulders — working multiple jobs, stretching every dollar, and still coming up short some months. I saw her cry from exhaustion and heartbreak more times than I can count, and every time, it broke something inside me. I wanted to give her the world, but it always felt just out of reach. We never lost our faith, telling ourselves “maybe next year,” or “someday,” holding onto hope.
Over the years, my mom and I forged a bond that transcended family — she became my best friend, my safe place, and the one person I couldn’t imagine living without. We leaned on each other through the hardest days, finding strength in our connection that kept us going when everything else felt like it was falling apart.
Despite everything we had been through, my mother never gave up. She stepped out into the world and met someone who truly saw us—our investor. Someone who, like us, had faced struggles and longed for more out of life. They looked past our challenges and believed in the fire we carried inside, choosing to stand with us, lift us up, and help turn our dream into a reality.
It was in that moment, with our hope rekindled and a chance to rewrite our story, that One Stop Tent Shop came to life — born from years of pain, endless perseverance, and the unwavering belief that better days are always just ahead, even when you least expect it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Has it been a smooth road? Not at all. Our journey has been filled with significant challenges — both personal and professional — that have tested us in ways we never expected. When we finally took the brave step to start One Stop Tent Shop, hoping to build something stable and meaningful, the challenges didn’t stop—they simply changed form. One of the hardest blows came from a web developer who promised us a finished, professional website but instead left us with delays, poor communication, and an incomplete product. Months were lost, money was wasted, and it was incredibly disheartening to feel overlooked and let down when we were pouring our hearts into this dream.
But we’ve learned that challenges don’t disappear once you launch a business—they’re part of the journey. They test your strength and your spirit. And while it hasn’t been easy, every obstacle has only made us stronger, more determined, and more committed to what we’re building.
What doesn’t kill us truly does make us stronger. With each painful setback, we find the strength to rise again—because this business, this dream, means more to us than any hardship we’ve faced.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The core of our business is about bringing people together to celebrate life’s meaningful moments — because in a world that moves fast, we believe in pausing to remember what truly matters.
We believe that planning a special event — whether it’s a birthday, wedding, baby shower, or celebration just because — should feel exciting, not overwhelming. But too often, the process becomes stressful. You find yourself making countless phone calls, juggling different vendors, comparing prices, and hoping everything aligns. It’s exhausting. And honestly, it takes away from the joy of the moment. That’s where we come in.
Our goal is to simplify the experience entirely. We created a platform where everything you need is in one place — from trusted vendors to event coordination. We handle the conversations, the quotes, the availability checks, and the follow-ups. We take the weight off your shoulders, so you can focus on what truly matters: the people you’re bringing together.
Think of us as your behind-the-scenes team — making sure your event has everything it needs, without the hassle. We don’t just help you plan. We create peace of mind. And even though we’re in the early stages of building this dream, we’re growing every single day — fueled by the belief that connection is everything, and celebrations should be stress-free.
As previously mentioned, We’re still in the beginning stages — building this business from the ground up with a lot of heart, late nights, and a deep belief in what we’re creating. This started as a simple idea: to make people’s lives easier and bring them together through unforgettable events. But it’s become so much more than that. It’s our passion, our purpose, and the dream we’re working toward every single day. We know we’re not “there” yet — but we’re growing. Step by step, vendor by vendor, celebration by celebration. Every conversation, every small win, every happy client reminds us why we started and pushes us to keep going.
This is more than a business. It’s the beginning of something meaningful — and we’re just getting started. The best is still ahead.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
It’s okay to be vulnerable — sharing your story with honesty and courage can create deep connections and open doors you never expected. Start by seeking out mentors who truly see and understand your unique journey, your industry, and what you hold dear. Don’t be afraid to reach out online or in your community, and always ask for help when you need it — you’re never alone in this. Most importantly, be kind and patient with yourself. Growth isn’t easy, and it doesn’t happen overnight, but with every step forward, you’re becoming stronger than you ever thought possible.
-If there’s one thing to take from our story, it’s that no matter how broken you feel, no matter how many times you’ve fallen, it’s never too late to start over.
