Life & Work with Adam Spencer of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Spencer.

Hi Adam, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey in the culinary world started with a simple love for food and bringing people together. What began as working in kitchens and learning the craft evolved into a career spanning more than 15 years in the hospitality industry. Throughout that time, I worked my way through different roles, gaining experience in restaurants, catering, menu development, leadership, and operations.

As a Detroit native, I’ve always been inspired by the city’s resilience, diversity, and strong sense of community. Food became my way of creating connections and memorable experiences for people. Whether it was serving guests in a restaurant, catering weddings and special events, or cooking as a personal chef, I found the most rewarding part wasn’t just the food,it was the moments created around the table.
Today, I continue to grow as a chef, entrepreneur, and creative, building experiences that bring people together through food, hospitality, and storytelling. This chapter is about creating something lasting one plate, one conversation, and one gathering at a time

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Absolutely not.

Like many chefs and entrepreneurs, I’ve faced my share of challenges. There were long hours, financial setbacks, self-doubt, and moments when balancing family, business, and personal goals felt overwhelming. Building something from the ground up often means taking risks, learning from mistakes, and continuing to move forward even when progress feels slow.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a chef, caterer, entrepreneur and the founder of Cultivate, an intimate supper club experience based in Detroit. For more than 15 years, I’ve worked in kitchens in a variety of roles, from line cook to restaurant owner, and those experiences have shaped the way I approach food today.

My work focuses on elevated comfort food and thoughtfully curated dining experiences. While great food is always important, I believe the most memorable meals are about more than what’s on the plate. They’re about bringing people together, creating conversation, and building lasting memories around the table. That philosophy is what inspired me to create Cultivate.

I’m known for creating warm, welcoming experiences that feel both elevated and approachable. Whether I’m catering a wedding, preparing a private dinner, or hosting a supper club, my goal is always the same: to make people feel connected through food.

What I’m most proud of is building something that reflects who I am. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to cater hundreds of weddings, private events, and celebrations, but Cultivate represents a deeper purpose. It allows me to combine my passion for cooking with my desire to create meaningful experiences and community.

What sets me apart is that I don’t just focus on the food.I focus on the entire experience. Every menu, every detail, and every gathering is designed with intention. I want guests to leave not only remembering what they ate, but also how they felt. In a world that moves quickly, I’m passionate about creating spaces where people can slow down, connect, and share a memorable meal together.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always creative and hands-on. I was the type of person who enjoyed building things, figuring things out, and bringing people together. Personality wise, I was pretty laid back, observant, and always paid attention to details. I wasn’t necessarily the loudest person in the room, but I was always watching, learning, and taking things in.

Food became one of my biggest interests early on because it gave me a way to express myself and connect with people. Some of my best memories were centered around family gatherings, celebrations, and meals shared together. I didn’t realize it at the time, but those experiences were shaping the way I view hospitality today.

I also had an entrepreneurial mindset from a young age. I’ve always been interested in creating something of my own and finding ways to make an impact.
