Life & Work with Abbie Lewis of Rochester Hills, MI

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abbie Lewis

Hi Abbie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Thank you for having me! My photography journey is much like many others – small steps and then one big, giant leap. 12 years ago I took a photography course during undergrad and learned an enormous amount of fundamentals, which has been a great foundation to my work. My now husband (and biggest supporter) bought me my first DSLR, and I continued learning bit-by-bit. Fast forward 11 years and our second child was born! We decided I could take a year-long maternity pause from my career as a high school counselor to stay home with my two little ones. I found the space and time to really dig deeper into my work, and I decided to take the giant leap to start my business. I am happy to say it was the best decision! I’m continuing to learn and grow as a creator and I’m excited to still be riding on this journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like many things in life, there has been bumps and many learning curves along the way. I’m continuously reflecting and learning, which is ultimately what keeps the journey exciting and energizing! As an independent creator it’s very easy to fall into the comparison trap (especially on social media) -I try my best to keep my mindset focused on myself, and how this is truly my business to explore creatively.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an “all things family” photographer – I love to capture all stages of life from engagement, to newborn, to families and beyond. There’s a certain magic in documenting those tender moments, silly laughs and special connections that unfold within a family. As my children continue to grow older, I recognize how fleeting these chapters are and I love being able to capture these special moments for other families.

With my background as a counselor, I am always trying to create a positive rapport and connection with my clients as soon as we meet. If that initial connection is there (especially with the little kids), it’s guaranteed to be a genuine and authentic session. I also meet clients at their comfort level – if they want direction, I’m all in! If they want me to be behind-the-scenes while they bake cookies as a family, I love that too.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
It’s absolutely crucial to have a network in this field for both individual and professional growth. I still remember the other local photographers who reached out to me when I took my “leap” and offered kindness and support. Social media has an abundance of online groups for support and creative inspiration.
