Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Sharpie J of Berrien County

We recently had the chance to connect with Sharpie J and have shared our conversation below.

Sharpie , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Recently I’ve been playing Session: Skate Sim, growing up I used to always skateboard around town. Now that I work everyday and am always busy with life its hard to find the time. So playing that game really helps scratch that itch for me.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sharpie J, I am an independent Artist from Michigan. I have been making music for a little over a decade. I make mostly rap music, but recently I’ve been venturing into Country/Country Rap. I do all my own mixing and mastering, promo, booking, I run my website SharpieJ.com and more. I recently just released my new single “Lucky To Be Alive” which is out on all platforms.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Honestly, I’ve always been the same, the world never told me who I had to be. Have I learned lessons in life that have helped me to grow as a person? Absolutely, but no one’s ever told me who I had to be or what I had to do. If anyone ever did I chose to do what I thought was best not what they thought was. I don’t have a follower mindset, I have a make the best decision I can with what information im given in any situation mindset.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Everyday, everyday I think about giving up. I think about never writing another rhyme, never releasing another song. Just work my life away on 9 to 5’s forever. Provide for myself and my loved ones. But then I know sooner rather than later I’d start getting angry, irritable, and sad that I gave up. Especially when you know that they’re people who’d give up everything just to have some of the smallest luxuries I have. And who knows maybe one day my song will inspire the next Sharpie J. So with that thought alone I know I could never give up.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’d say so, I mean I definitely dont want to be someone that people have to question is he genuine or not. But with that being said unless you take the time to get to know me, there’s always gonna be new nuggets of info for you to find out.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
I’d regret not doing everything I can to provide the best life for me and mines. I’d regret if I got old, and didn’t do everything in my power to try to be as successful as I can. I’d regret if I left this world silent. Thats why no matter what happens atleast the music will remain.
