Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Samaria Bass of Detroit

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Samaria Bass. Check out our conversation below.

Samaria, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes, I’d hire myself because I’m reliable, adaptable, and always willing to learn. I know I can bring consistency and effort to any team.”

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Samaria Bass, and I’m the founder of Pardon My Detroitness. This brand really comes from my heart and my story. Detroit has a certain energy resilient, creative, unapologetic and I wanted to capture that in something people could wear and feel proud of. What makes Pardon My Detroitness unique is that it’s not just clothing, it’s an attitude. It’s about embracing who you are, where you’re from, and not watering that down for anyone.

Right now, I’m working on expanding the brand, connecting with more people who share that same spirit, and building a community around it. For me, it’s not just about selling products it’s about representing a lifestyle and giving Detroit the love it deserves.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Bonds break when trust breaks when people stop being honest, stop listening, or let ego get louder than love. But they’re restored through vulnerability, forgiveness, and the courage to show up again. The same things that tear us apart can be the very things that make us stronger if we’re willing to face them head-on.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Through suffering, I learned the weight of patience, the power of resilience, and the value of quiet growth truths that success can’t hand you; it only arrives after you’ve been tested.”

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
One project I’m fully committed to is partnering my brand, Pardon My Detroitness, with one of Detroit’s sports stadiums whether it’s Ford Field, Comerica Park, or Little Caesars Arena. I believe in representing Detroit on a big stage and putting our city’s spirit front and center. One day, I want to see the whole state walking around in my brand. It might take time, but I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen because I truly believe in the impact it could have for the brand and the city.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace either around my family or by the water, just relaxing. Those moments help me reset, reflect, and recharge. Being with loved ones or in a calm environment reminds me what really matters and keeps me grounded.
