Inspiring Conversations with Xavier E. Prather of LawyerLike

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xavier E. Prather

Hi Xavier E., it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It’s been an interesting ride! My goal for much of my life was to be a professional basketball player. The NBA was a long shot, but playing basketball professionally overseas felt like a real possibility. I attended high school at Gull Lake High School. I was considered one of the top basketball players in the area. I would sign a national letter of intent to play basketball at Spring Arbor University. Fast forward to my junior season. Our team is playing well, and I was having my best season thus far in my collegiate career. We tip the ball up in our first conference game of the year, and within forty-five seconds, I suffered a season-ending injury (torn ACL). This was the first time in my life that I realized at some point, basketball would stop, whether I liked it or not. So, what was my plan B? It was at this time I took a business law course that would lead me to add a pre-law minor and matriculate to law school. I initially attended Valparaiso University School of Law before transferring to Marquette University Law School to complete my legal academic career, earning my juris doctor (JD).

After law school, I began working as an attorney at one of the top 200 largest law firms in the United States. After practicing for a while, I was contacted via Instagram about potentially appearing as a contestant on the reality dating show “Love Island.” I wasn’t interested in appearing on a reality dating show, however, in learning about that show, I rediscovered another popular reality show, CBS’s “Big Brother.” This game is something I felt I could do well at, so I applied, and the rest is history. I was crowned the first black male winner in the history of the show’s U.S. version and would subsequently appear on other popular reality competition series. Between appearances on these shows, I continued to practice law at the firm until I founded my law practice, LawyerLike, where I provide legal services today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest obstacles I’ve previously faced in my legal career was balancing my career in the entertainment industry with my career in law. This was a factor that led to the creation of LawyerLike. I don’t mind obstacles. As annoying and frustrating as they can be, they give people opportunities to be extraordinary and truly see just what they are capable of. Any obstacle I’ve faced has taught me a life lesson that has helped me grow as an individual and a lawyer.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about LawyerLike?
LawyerLike began as a legal consultancy and has become a fully developed virtual law practice adept at providing legal services in the post-COVID era. I have always tried to use my professional and personal life experiences to help others, as reflected in the services I provide through LawyerLike.

Sports Law
I received my undergraduate degree from Spring Arbor University, where I was captain of the men’s basketball team. After college, I obtained my law degree from Marquette University Law School. While there, I received a certification in sports law from the National Sports Law Institute, served as Articles Editor of the Marquette Sports Law Review, and completed internships for collegiate and professional sports organizations. My practice guides clients in navigating the legal intricacies of the sports sector, including but not limited to sports contracts, sponsorship agreements, and endorsements.

Family Law
Growing up as a product of divorce, I saw firsthand how emotional divorce and child custody matters can get. While at Marquette, I used my personal experience to propel my efforts in providing bono services to low-income, self-represented individuals dealing with stressful family law matters, for which I received multiple awards and recognitions. I now represent clients in various family law issues, including but not limited to divorce, spousal support, and prenuptial agreements.

Entertainment Law
I’ve been modeling since 2016 and have been represented by top modeling agencies nationwide. I’ve been fortunate to have appeared on multiple popular reality competition shows on some of the biggest networks in television. I even made a brief acting stint on The Bold & The Beautiful. I’ve also done some work as a social media influencer. My wide range of experience in the entertainment industry has placed me in an excellent position to help clients stay protected in relevant legal matters, including but not limited to talent agreements, social media branding contracts, and trademarks.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My journey would be nothing without my network of family, friends, teammates, colleagues, and mentors who have shown me unwavering support throughout my life.
