Inspiring Conversations with Vincent Parker of Parker Management Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vincent Parker.

Hi Vincent, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in Construction Management. I played basketball in college and overseas, so I spent all of my 20s chasing and living that dream. For the past 7 years, I worked for a civil engineering company on construction projects. We would remove old water mains on major roads or in subdivisions and install new water main, sanitary main, and storm main.

Last year during the pandemic, I had a lot of time to read and watch HGTV flip or flop type of shows. I grabbed my interest a lot. I wanted to become a real estate investor. So, I shadowed a GC for 8 months. Every day I would show up on-site and I was the project manager for the project. This project actually went horrible for the investor. It was a full gut on a really dilapidated house, in a bad neighborhood.

After getting enough confidence I started my own company because it was such a high demand for contractors that were reliable and did great work. So, I started my company and started with strictly demo and cleanouts. I found a dumpster company and built a great relationship with them; they later would sell my family our first dumpster.

So, the first couple months were crazy, we made six figures very quickly and I honestly took on too many projects at once. So, after going through some ups and downs, we figured it out.

Fast forward to now, I own the construction company, a dumpster company, landscaping company, two investment companies with partners, a clothing line, and working on starting a nonprofit. We started in Detroit and we now offer and have projects in Lansing, MI and Atlanta, GA as well.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest thing that I have told people is that I have mastered the art of controlled chaos. Every day, nothing goes as planned but by the end of the day or week, everything goes as planned.

Managing a lot of employees and clients can be tough but I honestly think I was made for this.

There were definitely struggles but they have all been worth it.

It’s funny because a fellow business owner told me about the 7-day challenge yesterday. He said if you can leave your business and go on vacation for 7 days you are running a solid company. If you can’t then you just have a job. During the first year, I went to Cancun for my aunt’s wedding and I came back to a disaster!

This year I am taking a trip again and I totally believe everything will be fine this time, what a difference a year makes!
