Inspiring Conversations with Taylor Gilson of Mid-Mitten Psychological Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Gilson

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi!

My name is Taylor Gilson. I am a native to Midland Michigan and am the owner of Mid-Mitten Psychological Services located in Midland Michigan. I obtained a Masters of Arts degree, with a major in counseling at Wayne State University. I formerly resided in south Detroit while obtaining my degree and got invaluable work experience working with a variety of populations in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. I have since relocated back to my hometown of Midland Michigan to establish my practice and serve the community that I love. Since moving, I have recognized that there is a dire need for marriage/couples counseling and trauma counseling services. I specialize in providing both services and am absolutely passionate about working with couples to identify core issues and concerns in marriage and to strengthen communication and a shared sense of vision for their marriage or relationship. I am passionate as well about helping individuals to work through their traumas experienced in efforts to live a more hopeful and meaningful life. At Mid-Mitten Psychological Services, we provide counseling at an individual, couples and family level and accept most insurances. Our goal is to help the client to feel valued and to empowered to pursue their individual treatment goals without fear of judgement.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My life journey up until this point has come with it’s challenges. At the time that I was pursuing my Masters degree, I was in the midst of recovering from an abusive relationship and questioned my personal sense of worth, value and ability. Given my experiences, I was unsure if I was equipped to take on the many challenges that came with being a counselor until a professor communicated otherwise. On my first day of class, my professor at the time said, “If you are sitting in these seats, you are meant to be here.” Those were the words at the time that I needed to inspire me to continue to focus on my life’s ambition. Not mention, I somehow managed to maintain a full time job working in an inpatient psychiatric unit, while attending school full time, and graduating in two years as opposed to the recommended three (Even though I was told by people in the field that it was not possible). After graduation, I was one of few interns hired into a full time position at the Partial Hospitalization program that I was working at. Post graduation, I joined NBCC (National Board of Certified Counselors) and continue to advance my counseling education by staying informed on counseling theory and technique as it relates to the field. Since then, I have worked to become a trauma certified counselor to help clients recover from the many challenges that come from traumas experienced. I would like to mention that my personal success was not an independent venture. I could not be where I am today in my life and my career without the love and support of my family, my husband and children and my faith in God.
I think that our obstacles and challenges help to define our personal values and shape the person that we are today. I am grateful for the challenges that I overcame in my life because they have helped me to better serve my clients. As a result of my personal experiences, I have made it my personal mission to help people to feel accepted at our clinic with unconditional positive regard. At Mid-Mitten Psychological Services, our slogan is, “Come as you are, where you are” in your life journey. We are a client centered practice with the goal of fostering a sense of hope to whatever the individual is experiencing as it relates to their mental and emotional health.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see there being a mental health trend focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, Autism spectrum, gender and identity issues, substance abuse, as well as focusing on topics related to self esteem and general coping in response to life’s demands of the middle class. I think that the younger generation is in an identity crisis and a value crisis and is experiencing high rates of suicide completions, addictions and low self esteem and a decrease in ability to socialize and communicate with others. There also seems to be an emphasis on cancel culture with the influence of social media and younger generations seem to experience difficulties with the frustrations of someone thinking, feeling or believing differently than a way that they like, prefer or agree with. This bipolarity of culture only seems to furthermore influence people living in isolation of one another. This is can be very unhealthy the human psyche. People by nature, need people. All the more reason as AI is taking over most industries, therapists will continue to be in high demand and the need for mental health counseling will only increase in time. I believe that the services that our clinicians provide at Mid-Mitten Psychological Services is essential in promoting not only the wellbeing of an individual, but in advancing society as a whole towards wellness.
