Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanisha Thompson
Hi Tanisha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2015, I created a Facebook group called Sisters Supporting Sisters as a space for community support. Over time, it grew into something bigger, and in 2021, I officially turned it into a nonprofit organization to provide resources and empowerment for women and children in Genesee County.
Then, in 2022, my house caught fire—an experience that deeply shaped my perspective. It put me in the same position as the people I had been helping, reinforcing my commitment to service. That moment fueled my drive to expand initiatives like Sparkle to Success, a program that helps young girls build confidence, leadership skills, and career readiness.
As a mom of two and an entrepreneur, I know firsthand the challenges of balancing responsibilities while striving for success. I own a women’s clothing boutique while also running programs like Flint Youth Strive and organizing community events such as book bag giveaways and holiday drives. Now, while earning my business degree at the University of Michigan, I’m focused on growing these initiatives, securing funding, and ensuring that youth in Flint have the mentorship and opportunities they deserve.
My story is still unfolding, but everything I do is about making a lasting impact where it’s needed most.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped me into the leader I am today. Balancing motherhood, entrepreneurship, and community work has been tough, especially while earning my business degree. There were times when I felt stretched thin, trying to provide for my family while also pouring into my nonprofit and youth programs.
One of the hardest moments was in 2022 when my house caught fire. Losing my home was devastating, but it also deepened my understanding of what it means to be in need. It pushed me to work even harder to provide resources for families facing hardships.
More recently, my nephew, Jakari, was in a head-on collision, and it has been incredibly tough. He has always been one of my inspirations—despite everything he has been through, he never let it change the narrative of his story. Watching his strength reminds me to keep pushing forward, no matter how difficult the road gets. With the strength of God, I’ve been able to navigate these challenges and continue my work.
Building Sisters Supporting Sisters into a nonprofit was another challenge. Turning a Facebook group into an official organization meant learning about fundraising, grant writing, and nonprofit management—all while still running my business and raising my kids. There were moments of self-doubt, financial struggles, and times when I wondered if I was doing enough.
Despite the challenges, I keep moving forward. Seeing the impact of programs like Sparkle to Success and Flint Youth Strive keeps me motivated. Every young person we empower, every woman we support, and every family we help makes the struggles worth it. The road hasn’t been easy, but it’s been meaningful, and I wouldn’t change a thing.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My nonprofit, Sisters Supporting Sisters, is all about uplifting and empowering women and children in Genesee County. What started as a simple Facebook support group in 2015 turned into a full nonprofit organization in 2021. We provide resources, mentorship, and community programs that help women and youth overcome barriers and build a better future.
We specialize in creating safe spaces for personal growth, leadership development, and community support. Our programs, like Sparkle to Success and Flint Youth Strive, focus on building confidence, career readiness, and leadership skills in young people. We also host community initiatives like book bag giveaways, hat and glove drives, and soup kitchen volunteering.
What sets Sisters Supporting Sisters apart is that it’s built from real-life experiences. I know what it’s like to struggle, to rebuild, and to push through adversity. That’s why everything we do is rooted in genuine support and understanding—we don’t just offer resources; we offer a community.
In addition to my nonprofit, I own Passion Boutique, a women’s clothing store that helps women feel beautiful and confident in what they wear. My boutique is about more than just fashion—it’s about empowerment. I believe when a woman looks good, she feels good, and that confidence can translate into every area of her life.
What I’m most proud of brand-wise is that both my nonprofit and my business reflect who I am—someone who believes in strength, resilience, and community. I want readers to know that Sisters Supporting Sisters is more than an organization—it’s a movement. Whether through mentorship, community events, or simply a listening ear, we’re here to help women and youth in Flint realize their full potential. And with Passion Boutique, I’m helping women embrace their beauty and confidence every step of the way.
If you’re looking for a program that truly understands and supports the journey of overcoming obstacles, Sisters Supporting Sisters is that place. And if you want to look and feel great while doing it, Passion Boutique has got you covered too!

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is making a real, lasting impact on the lives of women and children in my community. I’ve always been driven by the desire to uplift others, especially those who are struggling or facing adversity. Whether it’s through Sisters Supporting Sisters, Sparkle to Success, or Flint Youth Strive, my mission is to provide the resources, mentorship, and opportunities that can help people break barriers and realize their full potential.
My experiences, especially my house fire and the challenges I’ve faced as a single mom and entrepreneur, have shown me how important it is to have support systems in place. What truly drives me is being that support for others—showing up when it counts, being a listening ear, and helping people rise above their circumstances.
I also feel strongly about the power of community. It’s the connections we build, the relationships we nurture, and the collective effort to help each other that creates real change. I want to continue to create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and empowered to create the life they want for themselves and their families.
At the core of everything I do is the belief that with the right support and opportunities, anyone can overcome challenges and achieve success. That’s what matters most to me—helping others find their strength and succeed despite life’s obstacles.
