Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Zsigo.
Hi Stacey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My grandparents have always been a huge influence for me. I always enjoyed their stories they shared, spending time with them, and helping them when I could. This is how I knew nursing was for me. In nursing school, we make many connections and lifelong friendships. One great benefit of nursing is there are many different ways of helping people. As with many new nurses, I started out on the Med Surg floor. Over the course of time our family started to grow. This is when I decided to take on a more Administrative Role in nursing, Discharge Planning and Case Management. This is what led me to an in-home care opportunity. I initially made sure high-risk and vulnerable seniors had services in place to keep them safely home. Through time and many years, this grew into me owning my own Private Duty In Home Care company. Along with keeping seniors safe in their own homes, I also have an Adult Day Care, which specializes in Dementia and Alzheimer’s. My Grandmother and Great-Grandmother had Dementia. I always feel connected to them through the families and clients we help every day at our Adult Day Program.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Trying to balance raising a family and running a business is very difficult. Being a nurse my whole life I had no business experience. It is very important to have the right people around you. Having a supportive family is the root of how you can take on challenges. I was excited to have the opportunity to be a female business owner. I knew my family would fully support me, they understood how passionate I was with making sure our clients always had the best care possible. I was also very lucky to have some very close friends to lean on for the business side of things. Fast forward to the pandemic that shut the world down and isolated everyone. It was my job to keep both our clients and staff safe. At this time, our youngest was in high school. High School itself is hard enough, but when you throw in the isolation part, no sports, and having to stay home away from your friends, this was very difficult. In retrospect, this was one of the most challenging things I ever did. Would I do it all again. Absolutely!!!
As you know, we’re big fans of Homejoy of MidMichigan. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Homejoy was initially started in 2005 under a previous name of Care N Assist. Due to trademarking laws, we had to change our name during the pandemic. Our culture is taking care of loved ones by keeping them safe at home. This could be something so simple as cooking a meal or providing personal care, doing their laundry, and helping them with keeping their home clean. We also enjoy taking them out to their appointments, and wherever else they need to go. We treat each client as if they are our own family. We instill in our staff that we need to give at least 120% each day with our clients. We are always honored when a family calls upon us to take care of their loved ones. Some of our clients enjoy coming to our Adult Day Care. Our Day Care specializes in Dementia and Alzheimer’s. We provide Socialization, crafts, lunch, and lots of laughter. On one of our afternoon walks, we were approached by a teeny tiny kitten. All our friends at the Adult Day program fell in love with him instantly. We ended up keeping him! Alley Cat has lived in our Day Care for 3 years now! He brings much joy and laughter to everyone each and every day. We try to promote as much independence as we can. Families can drop off their loved ones to us while they take care of their needs. We always make sure our Friends leave with a smile.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a very quiet kid. I enjoyed playing yard games, riding my bike, and camping with my family.
