Shawndrica Simmons

Shawndrica N. Simmons is a solo practitioner at LawChic.com. Her Michigan civil litigation practice focuses on Labor & Employment, Family & Contractual Law, Probate, and Real Estate. She has been in the legal field for over twenty-four years. A former union advocate and former union president of the American Federation of State County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 3309/3rd Circuit Court, she now engages in litigation against employers, unions, school districts, and municipalities for civil rights violations while handling high-risk divorces involving allegations of abuse. She is everything contracts from sports death to real estate. She is a serial entrepreneur with her latest venture being opening a supervised parenting time facility in Oakland County while also offering mediation services based on income levels. She is married to a master barber and co-owns their hair salon Universal Hair Design. She is the mother of three biological daughters and six non-biological children that call her mom. She is an advocate for empowering others on their life and career journeys and has written several letters of recommendation and nomination for Black lawyers to gain recognition and well-deserved accolades in the legal field. To cope and balance life and career, she engages with her 200,000+ followers on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter via her alter ego Hoodrat2Harvard. She is a commercial and voiceover actress who has appeared in several commercials for Tyler the Creator and other mainstream brands and artists. Attorney Simmons embraces learning new things and adapting with the mindset that you are never too old to learn and do. She is a survivor of childhood abuse who defied the odds and didn’t allow her upbringing to determine her outcome. She is the first to graduate from college in her maternal family and the first to have a graduate degree. She showed her family what they could achieve and now they have one lawyer and two doctors. She was raised throughout the southern United States in Louisiana, Georgia, and Arizona. She then spent her college years in Detroit working for 3rd Circuit Court and eventually graduated from law school via the weekend program at Thomas M. Cooley Law School while working full-time. She is the personification of determination and getting it done. She is a former President of the Black Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, former two time elected chair of the State Bar of Michigan Solo & Small Firm Section, a former D. Augustus Straker board member, an American Bar Foundation Fellow, Detroit Bar Foundation Fellow and a Michigan Woman in the Law Class of 2020. She grew up all over but calls Detroit home. She is that Exit 9 girl.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The roads have not been smooth and continue to be rough; however, she knows how to navigate and get to her goals and help others along their journeys as well. She doesn’t look at life as a struggle but a school that has lessons to teach and things to learn.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Attorney Simmons has been in private practice full-time since September 2014. She celebrated being a licensed attorney for over 15 years last year, Court Approved Mediator, and owner of a Pontiac Parenting Time, the first supervised parenting time business in the City of Pontiac. She is all things children and contracts. If there is a contract involved she can address it. If there is a prosecutor involved then call someone else! She is known for being a staunch, no-holds-barred civil rights litigator who recently settled a precedent-setting hair discrimination case in the Eastern District of Michigan Federal Court. What sets her apart from others is that she doesn’t hold punches and tells it like it is and not how people want to hear it. She is most proud of not taking cases just for the money but using discretion and being selective in regards to her clientele. If you are looking for an attorney that knows what she is doing, knows what a judge wants to hear, and works in your best interest, she is the attorney for you. If you are going through a high-conflict divorce, custody issues, death, mental health crisis, discrimination, defamation, hostile work environment, school issues, parenting time issues, then give her call.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Truthfulness is the key.
