Today we’d like to introduce you to Selina Hill Lee.
Hi Selina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It’s a funny thing, having to write your own story. I have never been asked to do something like this before and I find myself hoping my story is enough, whatever that means, for the readers. I am in awe that I was chosen to be a part of this “Inspiring Stories” series. If you have read this far, then it’s more than I had hoped.
I was not born in the United States but in the outskirts of London, England. I am the daughter of immigrants, with a father who came from Jamaica to England in his teens and a mother who came from the Philippines to England in her 20s. Both searching for a life of stability and opportunity. I spent my formative years in England, moving to the United States to start university at 18, with my parents and siblings following shortly thereafter. It is not a wonder I chose a career in psychology as the core values in my family were a focus on education, honesty, self-reliance and helping those in need. My parents did not have the opportunity to attend college and I know I would not have had the opportunities I’ve had were it not for the two of them supporting and believing in me. My path to earning a Ph.D. was not a typical one as I took the opportunity to explore the United States when selecting which schools to attend for my Bachelors, Masters and eventually Doctoral degree. While working toward each degree, I lived in three different states in very different regions of the country. Upon completion of my post-doctoral requirements, I settled in West Michigan with my husband where we live with our two children. I strongly believe in being a force for good, reflecting this idea in the name of my company, Concordia Psychological Services. Concordia is Latin for harmony and peace, which I hope to bring to the people I serve everyday. I am proud of starting my own business and hope my clients appreciate the time, energy, detail and care I place in every assessment I provide.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been many things that worked out as I had hoped and several that were road blocks, but not barriers for me. The issues have been wide and varying from logistical to intrapersonal, but I have tried to view these obstacles and challenges as opportunities to believe in myself more fervently and not give up on what I am trying to build. I am very lucky to have people in my life who have an unwavering belief in me. This support helps me overcome any self-doubt that may emerge.
As you know, we’re big fans of Concordia Psychological Services. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a board-certified Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years of experience. I provide comprehensive psychological assessments for individuals of all ages in Michigan. I earned my Ph.D. in Psychology from Tennessee State University in 2010. After working for a large organization for 15 years, I founded my private practice, Concordia Psychological Services, where I specialize in both clinical and forensic psychological assessments across the lifespan.
In 2023, I earned my board certification from the American Board of Professional Psychology, demonstrating my commitment to the highest standards in the field.
I provide comprehensive psychological assessments to children, adolescents, young adults, and adults dealing with a wide range of cognitive, emotional, and social challenges. Some of the issues I can help with include:
• ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
• Mood disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression)
• Personality disorders
• Cognitive differences (e.g., thinking or processing issues)
In addition to clinical assessments, I offer forensic psychological evaluations (answering psycholegal questions) to help with a variety of legal and organizational needs. My expertise include, but is not limited to:
• Fit For Duty Evaluations
• School and Workplace Violence Risk Assessments
• Pre-hire assessments for organizations
• Pre-employment Public Safety Evaluations (for positions such as firefighter, police, corrections officers, bailiffs)
• Independent Medical Evaluations
• Pre-adoption Evaluations
The work I do can be challenging as I often answer difficult psychological questions that require nuance and detail. I try to provide this information in a caring and informational manner and I want clients to come away from meeting with me feeling as though they received a thorough evaluation. My goal is to understand the lives of my clients, use the best psychological tools I have at my disposal to provide a diagnostic picture and provide them with recommendations that are pertinent to their situation. In my forensic work, though the legal standard I adhere to in order to answer the complex psychological questions can differ, my goal with providing an assessment I am proud of, does not change.
What’s next?
My future plans include continuing to serve the psychological assessment needs of the community and hope the community will see me as a valuable resource.
