Author Bio: Raven Wright is the Founder and CEO of the Detroit non-profit organization, Urban Nature for Kids. Raven founded Urban Nature for Kids five years ago while attending Urban Planning graduate school at Wayne State University. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and a Master’s in Urban Planning. She is also employed as a Supervisor GIS analyst for the city of Detroit. Her main area of focus while attending graduate school was Geographic Information Systems. During graduate school, Raven taught elementary school (K-6) part time. During her experience as a teacher, Raven noticed that children who reside in low income communities were not being exposed to Earth Science career fields. She also noticed that there was a lack of Earth Science education within elementary schools that were located in disadvantaged areas. Raven believes children can benefit from being exposed to Earth Science career fields at an early age, that is why she created and founded Urban Nature for Kids.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road lol. I have encountered multiple struggles that were financial and personal. It is not easy being a small non-profit organization with limited resources and limited time. I believe our virtual platform allows us to reach a broader audience along with having more efficient time management.

Urbannature4kids is mainly geared towards children who reside in low income communities in the metro Detroit area. Urbannature4kids became a part of the Geo-mentors program in 2019. Ever since we have consistently worked towards the goal of encouraging public schools to implement G.I.S (Geographic Information Systems) into their curriculum. On our website and Facebook page, parents and teachers can access G.I.S materials for children. We have a G.I.S web page that directs visitors to free downloads and introductory G.I.S courses from Esri and Qgis. There are also examples of ArcGIS maps and projects on our G.I.S and blog page.
In the Summer of 2020 our founder and CEO wrote and published an ebook called the Urbannature4kids Earth Science Lesson Plan: Earth Science for Elementary School-Aged Children. The ebook is for children in grades K-4. The ebook is available only on Amazon.com and Kindle Unlimited. The ebook features digitally interactive Earth Science worksheets, quizzes, videos, links to Geographic Information Systems activities by ESRI, and printable word searches and games.
The ebook is only $4.99 and is geared towards parents, teachers, and students who reside in low income communities in the state of Michigan. Students who are struggling with their academics and have low science or low M-Step Science test scores can benefit greatly from the ebook. What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like Detroit. I feel as though Detroit is a city that is up and coming with lots of room for growth and improvement. I hope that in the near future that more attention, maintenance, educational/career resources, and affordable housing development is focused more on the neighborhoods in Detroit.
