Inspiring Conversations with Pedro Suing of kazkara

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pedro Suing.

Hi Pedro, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We started Kazkara in 2020 in Canada, two siblings, a coffee cart, and a mission to share Latin American coffees with stories behind them. From the beginning, our values were clear: transparency, creativity, cultural respect, and community. We collaborated with artists to build a brand that celebrated more than just flavor. Every coffee we source reflects something deeper, and our packaging brings that to life with artwork from artists who share a cultural connection to each coffee’s origin.
As the brand grew, we began working with Miguel Vidal to help shape DTROITR, a community-focused coffee project rooted in social impact. That collaboration naturally evolved. Miguel invited us to merge Kazkara into the broader vision, and we saw it as a meaningful step forward, an opportunity to expand our mission and build something long-lasting here in Michigan.
Today, we roast in Hazel Park, where our roastery also houses an espresso and brew bar serving a thoughtful, rotating menu for our local community. The space was designed for connection, not just to coffee, but to people. We collaborate with local partners whenever we can, whether that’s sourcing honey from neighborhood beekeepers, teaming up with local chefs, or hosting events that bring people together.
For us, coffee is a bridge, between people, cultures, and ideas, and everything we do at Kazkara is about building those bridges, one cup at a time. We’re excited to keep growing in Hazel Park and beyond, always rooted in the values we started with.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any new business, especially in specialty coffee, getting started without an established reputation was one of our biggest challenges. Since opening our doors in Hazel Park, we’ve been incredibly grateful for the way the local community has shown up for us. People have come in, tasted the coffee, and connected with what we’re trying to build. That kind of support means everything, and it reminds us why we want to grow thoughtfully. As we expand our wholesale program, our biggest goal is to continue sharing that same quality and care with a wider audience.

We’ve been impressed with kazkara , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At kazkara, we take a holistic approach to coffee, one that honors the full journey from farm to cup. We source coffees that reflect not just exceptional quality, but the care, passion, and cultural richness found at origin. That same intention carries through everything we do, from how we roast, to how we serve, to how we share each coffee’s story.

What sets us apart is the way we combine coffee, culture, and design. Each coffee we release is paired with original artwork created by artists who have a connection to the coffee’s origin. Artists submit work that feels authentic to them, often drawing from memory, identity, or place. These labels become part of the larger narrative we’re telling: one that celebrates the people and cultures behind each coffee. We also carry that storytelling into how we brew, create recipes, and connect with our local community in Hazel Park.

On the wholesale side, we take a design-centered, customer-first approach. We’re expanding our programs to support partners not just with great coffee, but with thoughtful tools, service, and flexibility that help them meet their goals.

More than anything, we’re proud of the way kazkara brings people together, through flavor, art, and shared values.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
We feel incredibly lucky to be part of a community that truly resonates with our values. From the beginning, people have shown up, not just to drink coffee, but to connect. They’ve appreciated our attention to detail, our commitment to quality, and the stories behind what we do.

That kind of support isn’t something we take for granted. It’s a reminder that while hard work and intention matter, being surrounded by a community that’s open, curious, and kind is a kind of luck we’re deeply grateful for. The warmth we feel in our space every day, through conversations, shared moments, and genuine smiles, is what keeps us going.
