Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Leydorf.
Hi Nick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My origin story is less “I always knew I’d be an attorney” and more “I accidentally became the person who explains complicated things for a living.”
As I moved through law school and into practice, I realized I didn’t love the idea of only being involved when something had already gone wrong. I wanted to help people before a crisis, while they still had options and clarity. That’s what led me into estate planning.
Starting my own firm was the natural next step. I wanted to create a place where families feel comfortable asking questions, where the process is straightforward, and where people don’t leave a meeting feeling like they just survived a pop quiz. Today, I help clients build plans that protect their kids, their assets, and their peace of mind, and I’ve loved getting to grow a practice that’s built on both competence and actual human connection.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not even close. It’s been rewarding, but definitely not smooth. There were a lot of moments where I had to figure things out the hard way, especially early on, when you’re building everything from scratch and trying to do it well without burning out.
Some of the biggest struggles were learning how to run an actual business (because law school does not teach that), staying consistent when things felt uncertain, and learning how to market myself without feeling like I was turning into an infomercial.
That’s actually part of why I wrote a book, “Comedian at Law.” It talks about finding your way through struggles and how I used humor to get me through the difficult times.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Leydorf Law Firm?
My business is Leydorf Law Firm, and we focus mainly on estate planning for families. Most people think estate planning is just paperwork, but what we really do is help people protect the people they love and make sure everything is clear if life throws a curveball.
We help clients create wills and trusts, set up guardianship plans for minor children, put the right powers of attorney in place, and build a plan that actually matches their real life, not just a generic template. A lot of our clients are parents who want to feel confident that if something happens, their kids and their assets won’t be left in chaos.
What sets us apart is that we make the process approachable and human. People usually walk into estate planning feeling overwhelmed, intimidated, or like they’re about to get scolded for not doing it sooner. My goal is the opposite: I want clients to feel informed, supported, and relieved. We keep things clear, conversational, and practical, and we don’t talk like a legal textbook.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the fact that we’ve built a reputation for being trustworthy, straightforward, and genuinely easy to work with. I want readers to know that estate planning doesn’t have to be scary, and it doesn’t have to wait until “someday.” If you have a family, a home, or people who depend on you, this is one of the most loving things you can do.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Whether he knows it or not, an attorney and friend of mine, Nick Bostic, has been a mentor over the years. Law school doesn’t prepare you for what it will be like I moved my practice to his building and didn’t leave for about 12 years. I learned a tremendous amount from him about how to compartmentalize the burdens of being a lawyer and how I needed to find a path that was right for me. He was also someone I could bounce ideas off and someone who would listen when I was at my wits’ end.
