Inspiring Conversations with Melissa Davis of Defyne Hair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Davis. 

Hi Melissa, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, there was hair I saw on tv and the hair that I lived with every day. I saw these women with beautiful long and healthy hair, I would say to myself “I want hair like hers”. However, I was always told that due to genetics, black women were doomed to never have long hair. Me being the maverick that I am, I wanted to challenge the status quo! That led me on my journey to figuring out how to grow my own hair and I already knew where to start. The internet of course! However, none of the products that worked for my favorite Youtubers worked for me. If healthy hair was the door to growth and products were the key, why weren’t they working for me? 

After thousands of dollars wasted on trial-and-error products and years of research on hair, I finally discovered that there were core hair characteristics that made everyone’s hair type unique. So, it wasn’t just the products, but the right products for my hair. This meant that the products I was using would be the difference between a good or bad hair day. 

After finally understanding how to shop for my unique hair needs, I would frequently be asked for advice on what products to use. Back then, my answer would always be the same- research. I would see the defeated look in their eyes and I thought to myself there must be a better way. How can I help them along the journey? How can I make it easier for them? How can I take the guesswork out of it and be able to suggest products with a high probability of actually working for someone without hours upon hours of research? That’s where Defyne Hair was created. After years of research and utilizing data science and technology, I was able to identify products with the highest probability of working for someone’s unique hair type. 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My road to building a beauty tech company has been full of bumps and bruises, but not in the stereotypical startup way that I thought. None of the books I read ever talked about the importance of mental health when trying to build a business! 

At the beginning of building out my business; in the mix of a pandemic, I felt like I was consistently looking at failure in its face. It’s almost like looking death in its face and that can be a scary thing! I had to get real up close and intimate with failure, so close that I realized that it was not real. You can never fail; you can only learn. Failure only truly happens if you stop. I learned to never stop; pivot maybe but not stop. 

So, I borrowed this saying and added a twist to it from Game of Thrones that I say to myself, anytime I get a little worried about failure. the saying is ” what do we say to failure, not today”!
