Today we’d like to introduce you to Maryanne Nicholls.
Hi Maryanne, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I majored in Psychology in University. Then to pay off my loan, went into business management for the next 20 or so years. However, during that time, my husband left me – and that led me to reconnecting to the world of psychotherapy. .The deeper I got into therapy, the more my desire re-awakened to be of serviced. So I decided to gain my stripes as a psychotherapist.
I began my practice in 2002, while still working full time in the business sector. Then in 2010, jumped into psychotherapy practice full time. I’ve never looked back.
Beginning as a Gestalt-trained therapist, I have since added skills to my roster when I felt they would help my client base – Narrative Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, EMDR, and now IFS for trauma work. My specialization is working with people who suffer from anxiety.
My desire is to support those who want a better emotional life for themselves.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was a smooth road in terms of becoming a Psychotherapist: it became clear that I had something to offer early on. Having said that, sometimes (perhaps without exception) it takes a crisis to make us move, and that was certainly true in my life. I did not want a divorce, but I got it anyway. I did not want to live on my own with no partner, but that happened anyway.
I’ve since come to appreciate both of these.
For all of us, there are sometimes huge bumps in the road. I see all of these as part of the process of life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I decided on the name of “The Joy of Living” because it describes what I truly believe is possible for all of us to attain, if we do the work. That can lead to self-love and self-acceptance, which in turn will lead to feeling empowered, and good about ourselves in our world.
Sometimes we need help getting there, and that’s where my services of either therapist or coach come in. I help you help yourself.
My ideal client is a woman in her 30’s to 50’s who is ambitious but anxious, who is willing and often does overwork to fulfill her ambitions, and who – for a reason she hasn’t been able to fathom – isn’t able to break that glass ceiling.
I know what that feels like and I know how to break it.
How do you define success?
Success for me is when my client no longer needs me. She (or he) is secure in their own abilities and has a growing content in their life process.
